Drowning Pool Is Working On New Music With Ryan McCombs

Drowning Pool has revealed that they are working on first new music with singer Ryan McCombs in more than a decade. McCombs and founding Drowning Pool guitarists C. J.Pierce revealed during a Facebook Live, "We are working on new songs. You don't even know. The new songs are flowing like wine, like a broken bottle top. It's a fine wine. . . . It's coming out everywhere. I can't put a cork in it."

He continued, "It's just, like, 'How 'bout this riff? How 'bout this riff?' It's insane It's creativity overload all of a sudden."

Pierce chimed in, "So, yes, we are actually going to record some stuff next week… But yes, new music is actually being recorded next week… We are actually gonna start tracking stuff next week… And it is jammin'."

Def Leppard Releases Orchestral Version Of 'Hysteria'

Def Leppard has just released their new version of "Hysteria" with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as a teaser for their upcoming Drastic Symphonies set, which will be released on May 19th. The new track features new elements added to the classic 1987 track -- including frontman Joe Elliott duetting at points with his younger self.

Blabbermouth transcribed some of Joe Elliott's chat about the new album with BBC Radio 2's The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, where he explained, "We first discussed this -- it was put on our plate by some grownups about four years ago. And, obviously, because we were touring, we were sidetracked. And then with the Covid, we did the new record (2022's Diamond Star Halos). . . It's only nine months ago now (that it came out). We were actually under the radar. We were in Abbey Road (studios) recording this record without telling anybody. So we had it ready to go the following year, which is now."

Def Leppard, who are now dabbling in the orchestral, has always walked the fine line between pop and metal. Guitarist Phil Collen told us the band took great pride in its massive pop crossover success with the 1987 Hysteria album: "Hysteria was. . . We had seven singles off that album, and where we really got a lot of fans is when it went into the Top 40 realm. So yeah, the pop thing, we're not embarrassed about that or ashamed. That's what we do. We're the hybrid. We always try to be."

In early 1988, "Hysteria" was the fourth single released from the band's 1987 album of the same name and became Def Leppard's first U.S. Top 10 hit, peaking at Number 10.

Corey Taylor Says Roadrunner Records 'Didn't Push' His Debut Solo Album

During an interview with All Things Music, Corey Taylor said that he felt that Road Runner Records 'didn't push" his debut solo album CMF2. The follow-up to 2020's "CMFT" will come out later this year via Taylor's label imprint Decibel Cooper.

He explained, "So when the time came to do my solo thing, Roadrunner almost halfheartedly put the first album out. Didn't push it. It's insane that we even did what we could with that, even with the pandemic going on, because they didn't care."

He continued, "So when the time came to kind of re-up with Roadrunner, they were, like, 'If you wanna go somewhere else, we won't stop you.' I was, like, 'That's all I needed to hear, dude.' I was, like, 'Thanks for that.'"

Joe Perry Explains Joey Kramer's Absence From Aerosmith Farewell Tour

Joe Perry explained why co-founding Aerosmith drummer, Joey Kramer will be sitting out of the band's upcoming "Peace Out" farewell tour -- but hinted at the chance that he might be able to join in.

Blabbermouth reported while chatting to Chicago's 97.1 FM The Drive, the guitarist explained, "His heart's in the right place, but, listen, playing the drums is an athletic event. And there's a certain point where. . . every joint starts to give out, man. So at this point we're not thinking he's gonna be there. We'll see."

Not too long ago when Aerosmith was prepping to head out on the road, Joey Kramer told us that playing live with Aerosmith still means everything to him: "Absolutely, positively, without a doubt. More than anything else that I do in life itself. 'Cause what it's about for me is being behind my drums, seeing those four guys in front of me, and playing for two hours. That's it -- that's what I live for."

Aerosmith kicks off their "Peace Out" farewell tour on September 2nd at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center.

Despite his health issues, Ozzy Osbourne is determined to play more shows. During an interview with Metal Hammer, he said, "I mean, doing a live show is what I live for. I've had to cancel my European tour but I'm determined. I've gotta do more gigs even if I have to get someone to wheel me out there. I mean, you can't retire from this game. It's not a job, it's a f*cking passion."

She continued, "I don't know how to do anything else. The thought of sitting in my house all day… I'm a road dog, you know? I've been doing it f*cking 55 years. It's the best thing to have ever happened to me."

Billy Corgan Reveals Why He Prefers To Be Called 'William'

During an appearance on a recent episode of The Mistress Carrie Podcast, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has explained why he asked people to call him by his birth name William. He explained, "Well, the way I see it in my brain is Billy is like my stage name at this point; it's how everybody knows me. And for anybody who knows wrestling, we mostly in wrestling call people by their stage names. Even if I know somebody's real name, I'll still call 'em by their gimmick name. So, to use the term, 'Billy' is my gimmick name, 'William' is my real name. So if you call me Billy, great; I'll still respond to it and it doesn't bother me. But my friends call me William. And I've asked people to call me William, 'cause that's, I guess, what I'm comfortable with at 56."

He continued, "It's been kind of a funny journey how we got to William. But I kind of blame American rapper, actor, record producer, and record executive Puff Daddy. I thought it was kind of funny how he kept changing his name. So I was, like, 'Oh, I'm just gonna change my name and see what happens.' And it turned into this weird thing; people wrote articles making fun of me for changing my name from Billy to William, even though William's my real name. There were literally articles, like, 'Oh, he wants to be William now,' like I guess if I was being posh or something. So me being me, the wrestling promoter in me, of course I made it worse by adding to it. Now I'm William Patrick Corgan, which is my real, real name. That's what they call me in wrestling. But everybody calls me Billy. It's all good."

Quick Takes: Aerosmith, Van Halen, Tom Petty, Metallica, Nils Lofgren

  • Steven Tyler's lawyers are requesting the judge presiding over the trial for allegedly abusing a minor back in the 1970's "strike out the plaintiff's claim of 'intentional infliction of emotional distress.'" According to the filing, Tyler's remarks about his relationship with plaintiff Julia Misley were described in his memoir Does The Noise In My Head Bother You? and the official Aerosmith biography Walk This Way are protected by Tyler's first amendment rights.
  • Tyler's attorneys are claiming that the plaintiff should not be allowed to use his own writing against him, citing, "The conduct complained of arises out of statements made in Tyler's published memoirs. Such conduct implicates Tyler's right to free speech." According to the brief, the content in the memoirs falls under the protection of "Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) and is barred by the First Amendment."
    • Julia Misley's lawsuit accuses the Tyler of "sexual assault, coercion of an abortion and involuntary infamy in the 1970s when (the plaintiff) was a minor and he was in his mid-20's." Misley, formerly known as Julia Holcomb, filed the suit on December 27th under the California Child Victims Act, "which allows survivors of childhood sexual abuse to file civil cases." The three-year "lookback" window for the cases ended this past December 31st. (Classic Rock)

  • Extreme guitarist, Nuno Bettencourt, said that Eddie Van Halen was eying a Van Halen tour with Michael Anthony just prior to his death. Bettencourt told SiriusXM's Hair Nation that while he was recording the solo to the song "Rise" from Extreme's latest album, Six, frontman Gary Cherone and Van Halen popped over to his house.
  • Bettencourt recalled Van Halen telling him: "'Hey, just between us, I wanna let you know, Van Halen's coming back and we gonna go out the way we came with Michael. We're planning a run, and we're gonna go out the way we came in like a farewell tour, but like, do it old school.'" And I'm like, "'Amazing. Overdue, way overdue.'" He was even saying, like, 'Y'know Wolf (Van Halen), he's the one who's like, he's reaching out to Michael.'" (MetalWani)

  • Today (May 4th) the University of Florida School of Music in the late-Tom Petty's hometown of Gainesville will be recognizing Petty with an Honorary Doctorate, a distinction that he dreamed of receiving in his lifetime. Brother Bruce Petty said in a statement: "I don't think anyone in our family, including him, thought that he would be linked with the University of Florida this way. It's such a powerful thing, it was his life-long dream, and I know he would just be over-the-top, crazy happy about it." (Press release)

  • During a chat with Metallica's fanzine So What!, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett spoke about the harsh realities he and his bandmates faced coming up over the years: "Because of the industry, because of the music, because of popularity, status, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, not all of us made it to this point. Some people got f***ing devoured and spat out. Some people just got devoured and never came back."
    • He went on to say, "I got extremely affected by it. Other people in the band got extremely affected by it. I feel like I'm a f***ing survivor, and I think that every one of us in this band is a survivor because, man, it's a screwed-up industry." (Metallica.com)

Sheryl Crow, George Michael, Rage Against The Machine, & Willie Nelson Tapped For 2023 Rock Hall

The 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are Sheryl Crow, George Michael, Willie Nelson, the Spinners, Rage Against The Machine, Kate Bush, and Missy Elliott.

This year's Musical Excellence Award will go to Bernie Taupin, Al Kooper, and Chaka Khan.

Musical Influence Awards will go to Link Wray and DJ Kool Herc, with Ahmet Ertegun Awards going to Soul Train pioneer Don Cornelius.

This year's Rock Hall induction ceremony will be held on Friday, November 3rd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The 2023 Rock Hall nominees that did not make the final cut are Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, Cyndi Lauper, Warren Zevon, Joy Division/New Order, A Tribe Called Quest, and the White Stripes.

Although over the past 25 years, Sheryl Crow's name, face, and music is among the most recognizable in entertainment -- she doesn't let fame and public opinion get in the way of her approach to music: "I have a different kind of relationship to fame and to the world outside. It's much more from a rebellious teenager kind of energy. But musically, I'm sure it makes its way in, but it doesn't really influence the way I approach music."

Bernie Taupin said that Elton John becoming a singer/songwriter was never some desperate need for adulation -- but simply a way to promote their songs: "When we first got together, obviously, there was no intention, or plan for Elton to make records. I mean, it really came about, simply because we couldn't get anybody else to record our songs."

While Down Under back in 1986, Elton John sang the praises of his friend George Michael to legendary journalist Molly Meldrum: "I mean, I first really got hooked into Wham! was 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go," which for me, was the best, like, Motown record -- everyone tries to make a Motown sound. . . The bass playing on that, that's what hooked me. And George's song idea -- he's only 21, he's been writing songs for two years and he writes 'Careless Whisper.' Bernie (Taupin) and I, our songs after two years were absolutely 'horrible!")

Back in 2007, George Michael appeared on Britain's Parkinson show and explained that his free and rebellious nature was a callback to a previous era: "I think I'm of my generation, only most of my generation have got no balls anymore (laughter) -- basically. Y'know, I think my generation were taught that it was okay -- especially as a musician -- to speak your mind, and we're living in a time when it's not okay and we're trying in an effort to return to 'family values' to pretend that some of the things that happened between 1960 and 1985 didn't happen."

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello told us a while back that Rage's message has been in plain sight all along: "I would say that the message is not very well-hidden. In the lyrics of every song and on every T-shirt it's pretty clear what we're about. I think that it's insulting to, y'know, members of the audience to say that, ‘Oh they don't get it,' or, ‘They don't pay attention.' Because I know when I was in the Clash's audience, I got it. When I was in Public Enemy's audience, I got it. When I'm in Fugazi's audience, I get it."

The great Chaka Khan told us she likes being her own boss in the studio and never fails to find her artistic process completely liberating: "I just thought creativity while I was recording, while I was in the studio -- totally creative -- and now the other aspects have come into play. And yes, I have to think about all the things I never had to think of before and didn't want to! (Laughs) It's not like I wasn't aware of what was going on. I was aware but I never had any power. I was never empowered in those areas, and now I am."

Aerosmith Announces Final 'Peace Out Tour'

Aerosmith has rolled out the initial 40 dates to their final trek, which has been dubbed their "Peace Out Tour." The dates, featuring special guests the Black Crowes, kick off on September 2nd at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center and, as of now, wrap on January 26th at Montreal's Bell Centre. General on sale begins Friday, May 5th at 10 a.m. local time on ticketmaster.com.

Guitarist Joe Perry told us that he and the rest of the guys in Aerosmith realize that age is a tremendous factor in the professional decisions they make: "You realize you're not an immortal, and you don't have this 22-year-old feeling of 'this thing can go on forever,' and y'know, 'I can do whatever I want, I can go for three nights without sleep and everything will be fine.' You start to realize that it's a very delicate thing, life is a delicate thing, and being able to perform at the top of your game is a delicate thing. And it's one of those changes, y'know, that comes over. I'm still amazed that we can put on the kind of show that we put on. Every night could be out last."

Steven Tyler recently explained how the habit of dangling scarves from his mic stand became a trademark for him: "We played every college in Massachusetts and a lot of clubs -- K-K-K-Katies, and we did four 45-minute sets, sweated to. . . Y'know, I was soakin' wet and I used to wear this shirt and after three months of that, the shirt just turned into rags (laughter), and I would hang it, y'know, as a rights of passage on the mic stand. So, one thing led to another. . ."

Although Steven Tyler has suffered through some troubling times on the road in the recent past, having hit the stage following foot, knee, and throat surgeries. Bassist Tom Hamilton remains amazed at how Tyler is unstoppable when there's a gig to do: "He took his knee out on stage a few years ago, and he just, he powers through it, he really does sacrifice his body, and so he's just gotta maybe ease up on that (laughs). I don't, I don't ever see him doing it, but I think. . . y'know, he's actually pretty good at taking care of his throat, so I think he's just gonna get even more intense about it."

The band posted in a statement:

It's not goodbye it's PEACE OUT! Get ready and walk this way, you're going to get the best show of our lives.

While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health. Joey's unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.

Billy Corgan Lists Top 11 'Greatest Heavy Metal Bands'

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has named Pantera the "Greatest Heavy Metal Band'" in a new video list for Revolver.com.

Corgan listed Judas Priest at Number Two and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow at Number Three. Corgan also went deep by including Merciful Faith, Savatage, and Meeker on his list.

Billy Corgan explained to Revolver why Pantera was Number One for him: "Pantera was one of those bands in the early-'90s that not everybody on the alternative side of the equation understood right away because they were seen as just a straight-up metal band. But eventually a lot of people in alternate music recognized that Pantera was one of those bands that, sort of, transcended genres. I think thematically and the way they changed metal and the way people played metal ever afterwards, I think it almost puts them in too small a category. And like the great metal bands, y'know, they tend to almost create their own category of music."

Billy Corgan "Greatest Heavy Metal Band' list - via Revolver.com:

1. Pantera
2. Judas Priest
3. Rainbow
4. Accept
5. Black Sabbath
6. Dokken
7. Slayer
8. Merciful Faith
9. Metallica
10. Savatage
11. Meeker

Ozzy Osbourne Misses Performing Live 'Terribly'

Sharon Osbourne says Ozzy Osbourne misses performing live for his fans "terribly." During an interview with The Sun, Sharon says that Ozzy feels like he's "let down" his fans after having to cancel European and UK tour dates. Back in February, Ozzy announced his retirement from touring due to various health issues.

Sharon said, "The biggest love affair of Ozzy's life is his audience and performing. He misses the live audience, he misses his fans terribly. He feels he's let them down. Performing is what he is born to do. Ozzy says to me that he can't do anything as good as performing. I get heartbroken when I hear him say that and knowing he cannot go out and do what he is meant to do. But he will get there."

Sharon added, "This is the longest time Ozzy has ever been at home. He is driving me crazy, every f*cking day.

She went on, "Ozzy said to me during Covid, ‘Do you think we are spending too much time together?' I'm like, ‘Yeah, but where the f*ck do I go? I can't go to a hotel, what do you want me to do? Where do you want me to go?' And he said, ‘I didn't think of that.'"

Paul Stanley Airs His Opinion On Transgender Kids - And Their Parents

Paul Stanley has never been one to hold his tongue when it comes to expressing himself -- although more than few fans were confused, if not outright angered, at why he felt the need to suddenly air his opinion on transgender kids and their parents.

Stanley posted a message, titled, "My Thoughts On What I'm Seeing," on Instagram that reads in full:

There is a BIG difference between teaching acceptance and normalizing and even encouraging participation in a lifestyle that confuses young children into questioning their sexual identification as though some sort of game and then parents in some cases allow it.

There ARE individuals who as adults may decide reassignment is their needed choice but turning this into a game or parents normalizing it as some sort of natural alternative or believing that because a little boy likes to play dress up in his sister's clothes or a girl in her brother's, we should lead them steps further down a path that's far from the innocence of what they are doing.

With many children who have no real sense of sexuality or sexual experiences caught up in the ‘fun' of using pronouns and saying what they identify as, some adults mistakenly confuse teaching acceptance with normalizing and encouraging a situation that has been a struggle for those truly affected and have turned it into a sad and dangerous fad.

Kiss kicks off its final North American tour on May 27th at Columbus, Ohio's Historic Crew Stadium.

Joe Perry On Steven Tyler: 'We're Due Some Good Times'

With the news about Aerosmith's upcoming tour about to be announced, Joe Perry spoke candidly about his over 50-year partnership with fellow "Toxic Twin" Steven Tyler.

Blabbermouth transcribed some of Perry's chat with Boston's WCVB Channel 5, in which the guitarist explained, "We've had our ups and downs. And like everything, there's a balance; there's the good and the bad. So, it was as bad as it could get, and it's also been as good as it can get. And I have to say right now, it's about as good as it can get. I think we've paid our dues on the other end. So, we're due some good times."

Perry went on to say, "There are families out there who don't talk to each other for 10 years. There are brothers out there that don't talk to each other because they're no use to each other or for whatever reason. I mean, if we operated like that there would be no band and we wouldn't be able to make the music we make and perform the way we perform. That, to me, is the goal. We achieved it once and let the thing fall apart and rebuilt it again on what I thought was firmer ground, but people don't change much over the years. I guess that's part of the lesson."

Joe Perry told us that -- plain and simple -- his love and appreciation for Steven Tyler is a constant in his life: "God, I mean, we raised our kids together, we took vacations together. He's done some pretty amazing things. He's also an amazing singer. So, like I said in my book, I know he's gonna be a handful, but I really wanna be in a band with this guy."

On May 26th, Joe Perry will release a revamped version of his last solo album, Sweetzerland Manifesto -- now renamed Sweetzerland Manifesto MKII. The collection features alternate versions of the tracks from the original 2018 set along with newly recorded material.

Lars Ulrich: Metallica Has Enough Ideas For 20 New Albums

Even as Metallica rides high on the charts with its new 72 Seasons collection, drummer Lars Ulrich says the band has more than enough material to last them through the end.

During a chat with Revolver, Ulrich spoke about all the unrealized and unmined musical bits the band still hasn't realized: "We have enough ideas for another 20 records. We will never get all the riffs and the ideas to fruition because history dictates that that's just not gonna happen. There's never a conversation about should we make new music as in should we not make new music. New music is a vital, vital, huge, huge, significant part of who we are."

Ulrich said that he views how well an album does in a completely different light than he did when Metallica was coming up, explaining, "I would say a big thing for me about the success of this record is the joy of making it. So, in the past I think there have been times where you had to make a record. The record company (would tell you), 'Now you've gotta go make a record.' Those days are long gone. Now we make music because we want to, and we do it with joy and with a sense of appreciation. And we're not (going), 'Oh my God. There's an idea. What happens if that idea doesn't play out exactly how I want it?' -- all that craziness."

Not too long ago, Lars Ulrich told us how the band's assorted riffs and jamming gets shaped into new Metallica tunes: "We have all these riffs and it's kind of puzzle-like. We just sort of go through, y'know, that process and continue to revisit and 'Oh, wait a minute, that's really cool the way those two fit together but it doesn't really work with that other thing, so why don't we take those two and put them with that other thing, y'know, Number Seven from over here' -- or whatever. So that's very much our process and we just sort of keep going through it until it sort of eventually turns into songs."

Metallica performs on Saturday (April 29th) at Amsterdam's Johan Cruijff Arena.
