Rockers Pay Tribute To Queen Elzabeth II

The rock community has come out in force to salute Britain's late-Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8th at age 97.

The shortest Beatles song in the band's catalogue was Paul McCartney's 23-second paean to the Queen, titled "Her Majesty." At the time of Abbey Road's original release in September 1969, McCartney spoke about the inspiration for the set's only fully acoustic track: "I don't know, y'know, I was in Scotland, and I was just writing this little tune. I can never tell, like, how tunes come out. I wrote this tune and it happened to start off 'Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl. . . ' I mean, you could refer, like they refer to a girl as, y'know, 'Lady,' or 'girl,' y'know, like 'Lady Madonna,' or just some sort of name you call a girl. It could be that, too, y'know, 'Her Majesty' (exaggerated accent) worshiping your girlfriend or your wife."

ROCKERS REMEMBER QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Paul McCartney: "God bless Queen Elizabeth II. May she rest in peace. Long live The King."

Ringo Starr: "God bless Queen Elizabeth peace and love to all the family peace and love Ringo."

Julian Lennon: "Rest in Peace Dear Queen Elizabeth II."

Yoko Ono & Sean Lennon: "We would like to send out deepest sympathy to the Royal family following the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II; a strong and powerful woman whose seventy year reign was served with integrity, dignity, grace and compassion. With love, Yoko and Sean Ono Lennon."

The Beatles: "Thank you Ma'am. With love and gratitude. From all at Apple."

The Rolling Stones: "The Rolling Stones extend their deepest sympathy to the Royal family on the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who was a constant presence in their lives as in countless others."

Mick Jagger: "For my whole life Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has always been there. In my childhood I can recall watching her wedding highlights on TV. I remember her as a beautiful young lady, to the much beloved grandmother of the nation. My deepest sympathies are with the Royal family."

Elton John: "Along with the rest of the nation, I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's passing. She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth. Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly."

Barbra Streisand: "Sad to hear about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. She was a constant for us all. Respected around the world. May she rest in peace. Barbra."

Ozzy Osbourne: "I mourn with my country the passing of our greatest Queen. With a heavy heart I say it is devastating the thought of England without Queen Elizabeth II"

Geezer Butler: Sad to hear of The Queen passing. I remember the street celebrations when she was crowned Queen. Always a staple of growing up in England. GSTQ- RIP"

Duran Duran: "Her Majesty the Queen has presided over the UK for longer than any other British monarch. She dedicated her life to the people and set an extraordinary example to the world throughout her reign. She's seen changes that are beyond what any of us can imagine. She has faced challenges that she has risen to time and again. Her life has been remarkable in so many ways. We will all miss her and are grateful for the incredible service she gave to the people of Great Britain and the countries of the Commonwealth. We send our deepest condolence to the royal family. Her death brings to an end a long and unique chapter in the history of the United Kingdom and the world."

Joe Elliott: "Dignity. If there's ever one word to describe this wonderful lady & monarch it's dignity. We will never see the likes of this again."

Bryan Adams: "RIP Queen Elizabeth II"

Jon Bon Jovi: "Queen Elizabeth was the ultimate example of service and duty… today is a sad day."

Annie Lennox: "I just found out that HRH the Queen has peacefully passed away. One of my early memories from the late 50's, is standing on the roadside among a crowd of people, waving little Union Jack flags as we waited for the royal car to drive by. The Queen had arrived to open a new bridge on the outskirts of Aberdeen. It all felt very grand and festive, with everyone hoping to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty. Tremendous excitement and expectation was in the air. Suddenly the grandest Rolls Royce limousine appeared and I remember the glimpse of a gloved royal hand waving behind the window. Then it was all over in a flash and the Queen had gone. A monarch's life is lived with two distinct sides. One is as an outwards facing public figure and representative of their country, and the other is as a human being and private person. There is a difference between the two. Queen Elizabeth came from a time in history when there was still a modicum of separation between them. Gradually over time the world changed, and the outside world via the media had more ‘access' to the ‘private' world than ever before. I think she did an incredible job of staying on course throughout the extraordinary events of her reign and her lifetime. Whether you happen to be pro or anti monarchy, there's no question that she totally performed her duties par excellence right up to a few days before her passing. I doubt that anyone can compare to her. Britain has lost one of it's most outstanding monarchs, the like of which I doubt will ever be seen again. R.I.P Queen Elizabeth."

Liz Phair: I am in no way cool w a post QEII world. Don't lecture me about imperialism; she was NOT an absolute monarch (a system founded by men) and never tried to be. She knew with exquisite precision the bounds of her tricky role, and I adored her for maintaining it so elegantly."

Legendary Jimi Hendrix 1969 L.A. Forum Show Coming In November

Coming on November 18th is Jimi Hendrix Experience - Los Angeles Forum: April 26, 1969. The new archival set will be issued on double-LP vinyl and CD -- as well as all digital platforms. The original concert featured such opening acts as Chicago Transit Authority -- soon-to-be renamed Chicago -- and Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys, who shared management with Hendrix. Floor seats cost $6.50 -- that's $51.20 in 2022 dollars.

According to the announcement, Hendrix was quite vocal during the show telling the crowd before "Red House": "Everybody want to know what America's soul is; everybody think it's Motown . . . America's soul is something more like this here" and joking during "Purple Haze": "'Scuse me while I kiss that policeman!" Hendrix went on to dedicate "Spanish Castle Magic" to "the plain clothes police out there and other goofballs." Prior to "The Star Spangled Banner" Hendrix quipped: "Here's a song we was all brainwashed with."

Interestingly, the Experience opened the gig with "Tax Free" -- an obscure 1967 instrumental tune by Swedish duo Hansson & Karlsson with whom Hendrix and the band had previously performed alongside in Stockholm.

On July 7th, 1969, Jimi Hendrix appeared on ABC's The Dick Cavett Show and explained how he felt that music was becoming the definitive and truest form of communication: "It's getting to me more spiritual so. . . than anything now. Pretty soon I believe that we have to rely on music to get some peace of mind or some satisfaction -- direction, actually. More so than politics, because, like, politics is really an ego scene. It's the art of words, which means nothing, y'know? So, therefore, you have to rely on more of an Earthier substance -- like music."

The tracklist to Jimi Hendrix Experience - Los Angeles Forum: April 26, 1969 is:

Intro
"Tax Free"
"Foxey Lady"
"Red House"
"Spanish Castle Magic"
"Star Spangled Banner"
"Purple Haze"
"I Don't Live Today"
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"
"Sunshine Of Your Love"
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"

Perry Farrell Credits His Own Record Label For Studio Resurgence

Perry Farrell is running hot in the studio these days, prepping work for all three of his bands -- Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, and Kind Heaven Orchestra. Farrell confirmed that original Jane's bassist Eric Avery is firmly back in the fold, telling NME, "Yes, and we recorded three songs with him. That Jane's rhythm section is back. I feel like making music, and I don't want to wait around for anyone to tell me that I'm worth it so I'm just going to put it together."

Farrell spoke about the liberation his new Imprint Label has had on his creativity across his musical palatte: "I invited Eric to participate in songwriting, I went up to Johnny Depp's place and laid down seven or eight songs. Some of them are Kind Heaven Orchestra, some of them are Porno's, some of them are Jane's Addiction. Everybody contributed. Now I have these songs, I hang on to them and to me they're valuable. I don't need anyone to tell me what they're worth. I can put them out at a pace, and it could be six months or eight months or wait a year. If I want to, I can drop one next week, but I wouldn't. You want to have a grand carriage for your songs. But, I don't have 50 other things that I have to drop. I can really dress the window myself, because it's my own store."

Regarding Jane's Addiction's upcoming tour with Smashing Pumpkins, Farrell said, "We're building a really well-produced show. A record is one thing but if you're going to bother to appear then you're performing, so the performance is going to be incredible. Wardrobe, video, dancers, it's all going to be there."

Jane's Addiction will always be based around the electricity generated between Perry Farrell and Dave Navaro. Upon reuniting in 2001, Farrell told us how he and Navaro worked hard at about fixing their broken relationship. "We had a chance to sit down and have a good cry about, he felt I wasn't his friend, and I felt he wasn't my friend. Y'know, friendship is a little bit different than making music together. It really is. There's something, maybe, even higher about making music together and there's something, maybe, more personal about being friends. But I always look forward to playing music with him."

Black Veil Brides have released the video for their current single, "Saviour II." The song is the debut release from their upcoming EP, called The Mourning, due out October 21st.

Of the song, lead singer Andy Biersack said, "Black Veil Brides has always been a band deeply interwoven with our fanbase and our career has been so heavily predicated on the doors that were opened for us by the passion and dedication that the BVB army has always shown for us. In the early days of the band, our song ‘Saviour‘ was written as a love letter to them, a chance to say we appreciate you and want to do right by you . . ."

Black Veil Brides kicked off their tour with special guests Motionless In White, Ice Nine Kills and We Came As Romans last night (Tuesday, September 6th) in Fort Wayne, IN.

Fieldy Says His Stillwell Project 'Has Nothing To Do With Korn'

Korn bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu says that his Stillwell project "has nothing to do with Korn." According to Blabbermouth, he said via social media, :"Some clarity about STILLWELL. I've been doing STILLWELL for about 16 years, this isn't something new, although to some of you it is, that's cool. Along with my bros Wuv (POD) and Q (ARSONISTS, RADAMUS),we've put out 3 albums, we're about to drop our 4th."

He continued, "It has nothing to do with KORN or my status with KORN or anything else. It isn't Heavy music, it's alternative rock."

He added, "We've always wrote STILLWELL music while on tour with KORN or at home. We've actually opened for KORN back in 2011, and to add one more little fact, the 1st STILLWELL video 'Killing Myself to Live' was during a KORN concert (2006),back when David Silveria, drums was in KORN, he's in the video, that's how far back STILLWELL goes. Again, it isn't metal or nu metal or heavy music, and that was my way of being respectful to the integrity of KORN, I knew STILLWELL had to be different."

Unseen 1970 Led Zeppelin Concert Clips Discovered

Proof that rock history can usually be found in somebody's closet -- seven minutes of amazingly clear fan-shot footage from Led Zeppelin's legendary September 4th, 1970 concert at The Forum in L.A. has been discovered.

The footage, which is now up on YouTube, has been expertly synched with the classic bootleg of the show, titled On Blueberry Hill, and was shot by fan Eddie Vincent, who smuggled his family's windup 8mm Kodak Brownie into the gig, which allowed him to record in 30-second bursts.

Vincent told Classic Rock: "I had really great seats. They were right behind the band. I had seats in the front row, right behind John Bonham's kit. The only problem was that you couldn't really see John because the gong was there, but he came around and chatted to us while they were doing the acoustic set."

Jimmy Page says that pretty much from the onset of Zeppelin's career, the size of the venues grew to the point that the only place they could satisfy the demand was to play in the open air: "Right from the beginning of it, within a few months, going in to 1969 -- we can't supply the demand, that everywhere we play is full. And we start doing repeat nights it was full, full, full. So, when we're doing outside events, it wasn't confined by the four walls and you can see that it was just immense. All the way through -- all the way to 1980, we were just getting huge crowds coming in. It just kept appearing to get larger and larger."

Bassist John Paul Jones told us he's reminded of how great a live band Zeppelin was whenever he's exposed to their concert footage: "The fire in the playing was particularly noticeable, and the cockiness is there. We used to just rip from one song to another and just roar into them at frightening speeds. We were s***t-hot, as the saying goes, and we knew it."

Wolf Alice Reflects On Touring With Harry Styles

Rock band Wolf Alice is reflecting on hitting the road with Harry Styles.

Lead singer and guitarist Ellie Rowsell told Rolling Stone UK about their duet for her band's song "No Hard Feelings," "That duet was great. We didn't have much time to practice but it felt like a great moment and it's been a really nice memory I have to look back on. I loved being on stage with Harry and his band. It was the last day of the tour and it felt like a really nice day."

Drummer and backing vocalist Joel Amey, added, "We've had the summer of our lives going around Europe with Harry and we've been super lucky. We feel very blessed for that. When we were making this record we hoped there'd be the chance for these songs to exist in the live setting and that's happened and it's been amazing experiences."

Wolf Alice opened for Harry Styles in Paris, Stockholm and Berlin.

AC/DC's Brian Johnson Publishing Autobiography Next Month

Coming on October 13th is the autobiography from AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson, titled, The Lives Of Brian. Blabbermouth reported the book, which has been delayed for a year, will be published by Dey Street Books, an imprint of the William Morrow Group at Harper Collins.

The Lives Of Brian follows Johnson's first book, Rockers And Rollers: A Full-Throttle Memoir, which detailed Johnson's life story through his love of racing and automobiles.

Dey Street Books SVP and executive editor Mauro DiPreta said in a statement: "Brian's memoir captures an unforgettable moment in rock history. Anyone who wants to understand Brian's roots as well as the moment of ignition when he joined AC/DC and helped create a monster album will be in for an unforgettable ride."

The news of a straight-on memoir took us by surprise after what Brian Johnson admitted to us a while back: "I hate autobiographies. I think they're boring and rotten and I'm not interested, 'cause it's usually just some bitter old git who wants to get his own back at everybody, y'know (laughs)"

Justin Hawkins Defends Performance With Brian Johnson At Tribute Concert

Justin Hawkins is defending himself after some speculated that he took the microphone from Brian Johnson during their performance together at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert at Wembley Stadium on Saturday (September 3rd). He performed AC/DC‘s "Back In Black" with Johnson and Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich however he was not "stealing the mic," as some accused him. Yesterday (Monday, September 5th), he explained on Instagram, "The stage manager scrambled to prepare a microphone for me, but I didn't know which one I was supposed to take and I ended up having to steal Brian's, which looked a bit awkward . . ."

Hawkins further explained, "10 minutes before the AC/DC segment of the tribute, Brian Johnson asked me to come up and sing the second verse of Back In Black. I initially refused, I've never sung it before and I didn't want it to seem like I was gatecrashing. However, Brian really was insistent and Dave Grohl told me that 'if Brian tells you to do something, you f**king do it'. I had Rufus pull up the lyrics on his phone and I gave it a go, but in all honesty I think Brian just wanted to create a memorable spontaneous moment and have a laugh so he could really push on and smash the rest of his set . . . Brian Johnson is an absolute legend and Dave was right, I couldn't turn it down."

Queen, Liam Gallagher, Supergrass, Rush and Dave Grohl's daughter, Violet, all took part in the Taylor Hawkins tribute, as did Taylor Hawkins' 16-year-old son, Shane, who joined Foo Fighters on drums during the closing set.

A second tribute show is scheduled for September 27th at Los Angeles' Kia Forum.

Nirvana Wins 'Final' Lawsuit Over Cover Of 'Nevermind' Album

A Los Angeles U.S. District judge has dismissed a third and "final" lawsuit against Nirvana claiming that the cover of their 1991 album, Nevermind, is child pornography. The suits were brought by Spencer Elden, who appeared on the cover naked as a baby. He has been seeking damages from Nirvana's surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, as well as from the estate of the late Kurt Cobain, the photographer, and multiple record labels.

Rolling Stone reports that Elden will be unable to file another lawsuit because, according to District Judge Fernando Olguin, "it is undisputed that (Elden) did not file his complaint within ten years after he discovered a violation… the court concludes that his claim is untimely."

Elden said he will appeal.

Ozzy Osbourne will perform the halftime show on Thursday, September 8th at L.A.'s SoFi Stadium when the Los Angeles Rams take on the Buffalo Bills. Ozzy's latest album, Patient Number 9, drops the next day on September 9th.

The Prince of Darkness told us a while back that he has no definitive plans to retire: "I don't wanna stop, you know. It's been the biggest love affair of my life. When you reach a certain age in rock 'n' roll, people think, 'Well, this has got to be his last tour,' or 'This has got to be his last tour,' or 'You've got to come next Tuesday 'cause he ain't gonna do it after that.' You'll know when I've come off the road permanently. I mean, you'll know!"

Paul McCartney, Elton John And Others Join Foo Fighters Tribute To Taylor Hawkins

16-year-old Oliver Shane Hawkins, son of the late Taylor Hawkins wowed a massive audience Saturday when he sat in with his dad's band, Foo Fighters and a slew of other celebrities to honor his father. During the all-star tribute concert, the younger Hawkins looked like a pro playing drums on "My Hero."

Another one of the night's biggest moments came when Dave Grohl brought out Paul McCartney and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders to sing "Oh Darling." McCartney said it was the first time he ever sang it as a duet. They also did "Helter Skelter."

Foo Fighters served as the house band for much of the event, playing alongside such legendary guests as AC/DC's Brian Johnson, Elton John, Metallica's Lars Ulrich, Stewart Copeland from The Police, and Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor. Liam Gallagher was also there to honor and celebrate the life of the late rock star drummer who died earlier this year.

When Foo Fighters started "Times Like These," frontman Grohl was visibly fighting back tears as he began the tune solo. Then, after the song's second chorus, the stage erupted with music as the rest of the band joined in at Wembley Stadium.

Grohl told the audience: "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we've gathered here to celebrate the life, the music, and the love of our dear friend, our bandmate, our brother Taylor Hawkins. For those of you who knew him personally, you know that no one else could make you smile or laugh or dance or sing like he could. And for those of you that admired him from afar, I'm sure you've all felt the same thing."

Drummer Josh Freese and Omar Hakim played most of the parts that Hawkins would have played and Travis Barker of Blink-182 also filled in.

  • Dave Grohl brought out Paul McCartney and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders to sing "Oh Darling."
