Fans Choose Top 30 Nirvana Tracks

Nirvana fans have spoken and voted for the band's Top 30 tracks, with Loudersound.com posting the list and the backstory behind each song.

Not surprisingly, the 1991 Kurt Cobain-written Nevermind classic, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came in at Number One, followed by that album's "Lithium" at Number Two, with the Top Three rounded out by "Heart-Shaped Box" -- the lead single from 1993's In Utero.

Bassist Krist Novoselic told us appreciates the interest fans continue to have in Nirvana. "I do. I love Nirvana fans. I love Kurt and I love Dave, and I feel great to have played music with them. In some ways I've been finding out that Nirvana represents an evolution of consciousness for people and I think that's something to be really proud of."

Nirvana's brief-but brilliant career has been analyzed and marked as a turning point in modern rock. Dave Grohl told us a while back that the bottom line was that Nirvana simply loved to rock out: "There was a lot of that crazy, heavy element in Nirvana. Y'know, the one thing that Nirvana was against was just the bull****."

Ozzy Osbourne Doesn't Want To Die In The United States

Ozzy Osbourne doesn't want to die in the United States.

The 73-year-old rocker told the Observer that mass shootings are part of the reason he and his wife and manager Sharon will be spending most of their time in the U.K. from now on.

The former Black Sabbath front man said, "I'm fed up with people getting killed every day. God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings. And there was that mass shooting in Vegas at that concert… It's f***ing crazy."

He added, "I don't want to die in America. I don't want to be buried in f***king Forest Lawn. I'm English. I want to be back. But saying that, if my wife said we've got to go and live in Timbuktu, I'll go. But, no, it's just time for me to come home."

However, it doesn't look like Sharon will be bringing him stateside any time soon. The former cohost of The Talk said, "America has changed so drastically. It isn't the United States of America at all. Nothing's united about it. It's a very weird place to live right now."

Kiss Announces Deluxe 'Creatures Of The Night' Box Set

Set for release on November 18th is Kiss' "Creatures Of The Night - 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition." The 103-track collection features 75 previously unreleased. The set features a newly remastered original album with two discs featuring 34 demos, rarities & outtakes including unreleased gems like "Deadly Weapon (Penny Lane Demo)," "Not For The Innocent (Demo)" and "Betrayed (Outtake)."

Back in 1982, while promoting Creatures, Gene Simmons spelled out how important the band's true fan base remained even after a decade of success: "We keep in touch. We correspond with certain fans whose opinions we trust -- that they don't try to flatter us by telling us that everything is great. And some fans tell us that she of the things we do are not that good -- and that's very important. Someone who has an honest relationship with you. And we do have very close contact with our fans."

Coldplay Tops July Boxscore Grossing More Than $60 Million

Coldplay has been near the top of Billboard's monthly Top Tours chart for nearly a year, and now the band has crossed the hurdle.

The first few shows of the band's European tour sold over 700,000 tickets. That puts them at #1 in the July Boxscore Report. Translated to dollars, that means they grossed more than $60 million for that short span of time. That's an average of $6.1 million per concert.

Coldplay recently wrapped a 6 night stint at London's Wembley Stadium and just announced a string of new European dates that run May through July next year.

Along with a selfie, with the crowd in the background, they posted: "What an amazing way to finish the 2022 European leg of this tour."

TL;DR:

  • Coldplay is #1 on Top Tours chart.
  • The first few shows of the band's European tour sold over 700,000 tickets.
  • In July they grossed more than $60 million.

Francesca Hetfield was quoted by TMZ as saying, "After 30 years of ups and downs but always with a lot of love, I am extremely saddened that my marriage has come to this."

Earlier this month James Hetfield filed for divorce, with TMZ reporting Hetfield had filed the papers in California earlier this year.

The couple, who met in 1992, married on August 17th, 1997 and share three adult children -- 24-year-old Cali, 22-year-old Castor -- the drummer for Bastardane, and 20-year-old Marcella.

David Bowie 'Moonage Daydream' Soundtrack Coming Next Month

Set for release digitally on September 16th is the soundtrack to Brett Morgen's David Bowie documentary, Moonage Daydream. Highlights on the set include a previously unreleased live medley of "The Jean Genie / Love Me Do / The Jean Genie" recorded live at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar.

Other rarities include an early version of the Hunky Dory favorite "Quicksand" and a previously unreleased live version of "Rock N' Roll With Me" from the legendary 1974 tour behind Diamond Dogs.

The CD version of the set will be released on November 18th.

Moonage Daydream, which spans Bowie's entire career, hits theaters and in IMAX on September 16th.

David Bowie explained that his late-1970's work with producer Brian Eno forever shaped the way he thought about songs and music: "The whole idea of using a recording studio as an instrument, of not necessarily thinking that you have to be prepared totally before you go in; that accidents will happen and sometimes planned accidents work our really well. If there's a bad note, you can layer that note several times with other instruments and suddenly that bad note sounds like an extraordinary piece of arrangement."

David Bowie died on January 10th, 2016 -- just two days after his 69th birthday -- following a private 18-month battle with cancer.

Gene Simmons Says The Grateful Dead Was 'A Snore' In Concert

Gene Simmons has never been among those to hold his tongue -- whether onstage with Kiss or when discussing rock n' roll.

During a recent appearance on Dean Delray's Let There Be Talk podcast, Simmons couldn't help but share his disdain for fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers -- the Grateful Dead: "The English gave us Led Zeppelin; we gave the world the Grateful Dead. Come on! A guy with a beard holding his guitar close to his neck (laughter) -- that's just not cool. Good luck to everybody. I've gone to one or two of their shows and, look, I've got Grateful Dead fans who I like and all that stuff -- (the band was) the biggest snore I've ever seen. And by the way, it's like a sausage fest. There's not a chick in sight. Nowhere. It's like a Rush concert, one of my favorite bands. (Dean Delray): Oh yeah, totally! (Gene Simmons): You can't find a chick within a mile of that place."

Kiss kicks off its North American dates on September 21st at West Palm Beach's IThink Financial Amphitheare.

Mastadon Releases Documentary About The Making Of 'Hushed & Grim'

Mastodon have released a 90-minute documentary about their 2021 album called The Making of Hushed & Grim. The film chronicles the band's creative process, which was largely influenced by the untimely death of their longtime friend and manager Nick John, blabbermouth.net reports. John died of pancreatic cancer in 2018.

Last fall, Mastodan's Troy Sanders spoke with Classic Rock magazine and talked about the musical and lyrical inspiration for Hushed And Grim saying, "There was no way we were going to approach this album without addressing how magnificent Nick's impact was on us, as four individuals and as one band. There was no way we could ignore that. It seemed too large of a moment in our lives to not write about it. It was too monumental and too devastating for us to say: 'We're not going to think about that. We're going to write some fun, happy rock songs.' It doesn't work like that with us. From day one, we've always pulled authentic emotions into our lyrics, our story writing and our riff writing. It always comes from within. Nick not only made us better people, but he took our band under his wing and brought us to new heights that we never had dreamt of. This album is us honoring his memory and showing our gratitude for how he touched our lives in the most incredible ways."

Bret Michaels Speaks On The End Of Glam Metal

Bret Michaels has opened up about the end of glam metal, saying that he doesn't hold a grudge towards any of the genre's artists. He told AZ Central, "Grunge was great." While many fans and historians credit grunge for ending glam metal, Michaels doesn't subscribe to that line of thinking. He explained, "I blame nobody. There was definitely a change in the music business but I only blame myself. There was a lot of partying."

Michaels continued, "I don't have a victim mentality. I take responsibility for things that happen. You own it and you just keep rocking. That's what happened," adding that he's had "the time of my life" on the Stadium Tour with Poison, which also features Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Joan Jett.

He continued, . "A rock audience is a lot like a country audience. They're very loyal. So they never got the Post-it Note that said, 'You're not supposed to like this.'"

Sammy Hagar Co-Wrote A New Song With Eddie Van Halen In His Sleep

Sammy Hagar has revealed that the late-Eddie Van Halen came to him in a dream and wrote a song with him. Hagar, who'll release Crazy Times, his latest album with the Circle on September 30th, spoke about the visitation to Ultimate Classic Rock.

Hagar explained, "About two months ago, I had this dream and Eddie came. . . We hadn't seen each other for a while. He's going, 'Man, let's write some music!' I said, 'Yeah, f*** it, man. Here, let's go!' (We) went over into a corner, in this room. He had a guitar and he played me this thing. It was like this lick -- (just like) the last lick that Eddie Van Halen showed me, when I went back for the (2004) reunion tour and when he was a mess. I said, 'Eddie, show me your newest s***,' because every time I'd be around him I'd say, 'Show me your newest s***.' He'd say, 'Oh, check this out!'"

He went on to say, "(In the dream) he did this harmonic thing and he slid it up to a chord, like a slide guitar. We wrote a song with that lick. I remembered it. I got up in the morning and I wrote the song. It's called, 'Thank You.' I used the f***in' lick that he showed me in the song. . . I've got goosebumps, head to toe, (talking about it). So I wrote it (about that experience), and we'll do that song someday."

Hagar spoke about how he intends to credit the song: "Now, that's going to be an Eddie-influenced song, to the point that I'm going to co-write it with him. I'm going to give him credit and then maybe we'll donate the money to charity, whatever. You see, I feel so embarrassed about it because everyone's going to say, 'Oh, look at Sammy trying to capitalize on Eddie.' No, I'm not. You don't understand. This was a real f***in' dream, and I told you exactly what happened in it."

Last year, Sammy Hagar spoke at length about his final texts with Eddie Van Halen. During a chat with Kyle Meredith, the "Red Rocker" shed light on the tone of the chats and explained it was based on friendship -- not business: "It was so awesome. Our texts were so plain and simple -- 'Hey man, how ya doin'? And he'd start opening up to me about how sick he was, and, 'Dude -- I just had this tumor on the side of my neck -- ahhh.' So, I was always checkin' on him him seein' how he was doin' -- that was our relationship -- 'Hey, when can we get together?' Like, 'Hey Ed, tell me when you're ready, I'm gonna drive over and cook you a big ole' spaghetti dinner, y'know.' (Laughs). We were talkin' like that. Y'know, a guy's got cancer and is on his death bed -- we ain't talkin' about how much money he's got in the bank, y'know? We were trying to be friends and soulful and let each other know that we're okay and I'm there for ya."

Sammy Hagar & The Circle with George Thorogood & The Destroyers performs on Friday (August 26) in Maryland Heights, Missouri at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre.

Dave Mustaine Still Has Issues With Metallica Using His Music After His Firing

Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine admitted he still has an issue with how Metallica used his music after booting him from the group. Mustaine was a member of Metallica in 1982 and early-'83, and did not play on any albums by the band. Blabbermouth transcribed some of Mustaine's chat on The Joe Rogan Experience, where he revealed, "The thing that bothered me the most was I had all my music, and I left it behind and I said, 'Don't use my music.' And of course they did. They used it on the first record (1983's Kill 'Em All), on the second record (1984's Ride The Lightning). There's parts of my music on a song on the third record (1986's Master Of Puppets). All the solos on the first record are mine, except that they're just performed by Kirk (Hammett). And (they're) close but not the same. And he's not a bad guitar player."

Mustaine was pressed as to whether he's received royalties for the music he wrote for the band and said: "Well, most of 'em, yeah, but Kirk got my royalties for (the song) 'Metal Militia' (from Kill 'Em All) for many, many years. And he has to see the check, so I know somebody saw that I wasn't getting paid."

Today, after decades of torment over his firing from the band, Dave Mustaine feels as though he's essentially moved on from the hurt feelings his firing nearly 40 years ago caused him: "I just look at it like where I'm at right now. (I was) 20 in Metallica, and now, look at me, I'm 60 in Megadeth. And I'm a Grammy winner. I'm a New York Times best-selling author -- all these things."

The relationship between Metallica and Dave Mustaine, has often been portrayed as a testy one, although Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told us that all the reports of animosity have been overblown: "I mean, so much has been made of these relationships, and certainly speaking for myself, Dave and I have two separate relationships -- one that exists between Dave and I, and one that exists in the press and with everybody else. And I always know that, y'know, my and Dave's private relationship is always fine, and it's always one that's rooted in love and respect."

Megadeth performs on Friday (August 26th) with 5FDP at Phoenix, Arizona's Ak-Chin Pavilion.

Paul Stanley Says New Kiss Music Can't Compete With The Past

Paul Stanley seems resigned to the fact that no new Kiss music could ever measure up against the band's classic albums. Despite the band's last two sets -- 2012's Monster and 2009's Sonic Boom both going Top Three -- the songs have failed to enjoy a shelf life alongside the Kiss material from 1970's and '80s.

During his recent appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, Paul Stanley spoke frankly, explaining, "At this point, I came to the conclusion that it can never compete with the past. Not because it's not as good, but it hasn't the connection to important times in your life. It doesn't have that patina to it of, 'Gee, I remember I heard this song when I was 18,' or, 'I heard this song when I was on my first date or whatever.' You can't compete with that. It's more than a song -- it's a snapshot of your life at a certain point."

Regarding committing to him writing and recording a new Kiss album, Stanley admitted: "I think it's setting myself up for disappointment. Not crushing disappointment, but when you put your heart and soul into doing something and it kind of gets a polite nod, there's other things I'd rather do."

Back in 2012, Paul Stanley told us that he was particularly excited with the material on Monster, if for no other reason than it captured the band in a high point in its long and storied career: "With this album, we're totally at home with who we are, what we are, out past, present, and future. And I wanted us to take any blinders off so to speak. I wanted to unleash us, and let us be exactly who we are today. There's no getting away from our past -- nor would we want to -- but we're pumped! We're in top form, and the best way we can put it is, I didn't want us to make and album we once made, I wanted us to make the album we never made."

Kiss performs on Friday and Saturday (August 26th and 27th) at Sydney, Australia's Qudos Bank Arena.

Their next U.S. show is set for September 21st at West Palm Beach's IThink Financial Amphitheatre.

Chad Smith Calls New Red Hot Chili Peppers Single 'A Nice Gumbo'

Chad Smith feels that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' latest single "Tippa My Tongue" has a sound firmly planted in the band's past while breaking new ground for the future.

We caught up with the legendary drummer and he shed light on what he loves about the new track, which serves as the teaser to the band's upcoming double album, Return Of The Dream Canteen, which drops on October 14th: "It's a familiar sound. To me, it's got bunch of hooks in it, y'know? And it's funk -- it's got P-Fuck in it, it's got. . . I hear George (Clinton) in it and some (Jimi) Hendrix-y-kinda licks and it's a nice gumbo, y'know? And I thought it would be a good one that would be the first one to come out from that record and there's a lot of different thongs in there on that record. But yeah, that sounds like us -- but new, and I think that's cool."

Volbeat Releases Video For 'Becoming'

Volbeat released the video for the track "Becoming," which is reportedly a "tribute" to the Swedish death metal band Entombed. "Becoming" is featured on Volbeat's latest studio album, Servant Of The Mind, which was released in December.

Via an Instagram post yesterday (Tuesday, August 23rd), Volbeat's Michael Poulsen shared a clip of the song writing, "We were recording Servant Of The Mind in Jacob Hansen's studio, and we were about to record the song 'Becoming.' And it has that opening riff that's really inspired by the mighty Entombed, and you know, we just talked about why not put that Boss Heavy Metal HM-2W pedal on that Entombed was so well known for, and bands like Dismember and a lot of Swedish Death Metal bands, actually. It's the signature Death Metal Swedish distorted guitar sound, and it sounds disgustingly good (laughs). So, we thought, why not use that pedal on that riff? So, we did and it just ended up just sounding even more like Entombed, and it turned out to be a really good song and it was probably one of the most heavy riffs in Volbeat. But later on, of course, we were hearing the sad news about LG (Lars-Goran Petrov) passing, a very sad day, and I think it is still very sad that he is not around. He was one of our really great friends. I had a lot of great conversations with LG. And we were always hanging out when it was it was possible, and talking and helping each other out, as well. So, we decided, later on, to actually dedicate 'Becoming' to LG because of the great inspiration that we had in that song. So, yeah, 'Becoming' has somehow become the LG song."

Demi Lovato Dreams Of Collabing With Paramore's Hayley Williams

A collaboration between Demi Lovato and Paramore's Hayley Williams is on Demi's bucket list.

During a recent interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Demi shared that Williams played a role in her artistic development.

Demi explained, "I had a lot of people pulling for me that I didn't necessarily talk to. She seems like the type of person that would be pulling for me during those times. But yeah, I didn't get to know her that well but... she's one of my biggest influences."

She continued, "Vocally—oh, my God. I mean, she's still my dream collaboration. It's never happened, but she's still my dream collaboration. To be honest, I gave up on that dream collaboration. So, I didn't say it for years, but that's always been my dream collaboration."

Demi recently released her latest album, HOLY FVCK.

Ozzy Osbourne Has Opened Up About The Songs From His Upcoming Album

Ozzy Osbourne has opened up about the songs on his upcoming album Patient Number 9, saying that some may be controversial. He told Classic Rock Magazine that on his song "One of Those Days," he sings "One of those days that I don't believe in Jesus." He told the magazine, "That's going to cause sh*t, I suppose. It's not an 'I am an anti-Christ song. It's about those days when everything goes f*cking wrong, and you're going nuts trying to fix everything up."

Osbourne revealed that when Eric Clapton, who plays guitar on the track, first heard the line, he was apprehensive. "He said, ‘Oh, I'm not sure about that lyric.' So we tried to replace it with some alternatives. We did 'One of those days where I don't believe in Christmas,' but it didn't sound right. Losing faith in Jesus makes much more sense when the world is turning to sh*t."

Patient Number 9 Is Due Out On September 9th.
