Lorde Tells Audience She Took A Dip In The Famously Filthy Potomac River

At her concert in Washington D.C., you could hear the audience gasp with laughter when Lorde told them that she had been swimming in the Potomac River earlier in the day. Even with the US Clean Water Act, the Potomac is famously filthy.

In videos posted online, from her August 29th concert, Lorde said that she loved to swim in cities where she was playing. It makes her feel like she knows the people better.

After the show, she was briefed on the history of the iconic river and told fans "Now I know why you all were laughing," she said. "I'm happy to be a DC meme, you know."

Lorde is on a short touring break and will be back on the road in mid-September.

Lzzy Hale's Painting Hobby Helps Her Avoid Burnout

Halestorm's Lzzy Hale's life is consumed by music most of the time, but she finds she can give herself a break when she turns to her hobby of painting. While a recent guest on the podcast "Side Jams With Bryan Reesman," she explained that painting is "another way to turn your brain off, and I think that's important. I could say the same thing about cooking. It's important for people like us who are banking on the arts to keep things moving. You can get burnt out if you have all of your eggs in one basket. You can be like, I've been plugging away at this for a long time. I need a sidestep, I need something to take me away from this so that I can come back to it with fresh eyes, fresh ears. I used to feel guilty about it. 'I just spent four hours painting when I could be practicing guitar.' Or, 'I could be doing something else that would be forward movement for the band.' And then I realized that you shouldn't be feeling guilty for doing those things. Because it's all connected, and they all help each other."

Hale now has seven major pieces to her credit.

Halestorm continues on tour, with a show on Thursday (September 1st) in Costa Mesa, CA.

Ousted Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist Feels Rick Rubin Was A Hinderance

Ousted Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer thought the band reuniting with producer Rick Rubin was a mistake. Klinghoffer, who landed a plum gig as Pearl Jam's supplemental side player, spoke with VW Music and admitted, "I'm incredibly conflicted about my output with that band because I feel like, in both circumstances, producers got in the way of us truly making great music or a great record. I like almost all of the songs that we wrote together, but seldom did we capture them in the best way. I will say that in the case of (the) I'm With You (album), I feel Rick Rubin was way more a hindrance than a help. He told me once, 'I just want to help the songs be the best they can be.' I should've said, 'Well, then get your driver to come and get you.'"

When pressed about the challenges with taking the stage with Pearl Jam night after night, Klinghoffer answered: "I face a constant risk of smiling too much (laughs). I sometimes allow my 12-year-old self to run away with my face. The challenges these days are more just little things like doing my part of a song that doesn't get played very often. Sometimes, for me, it's really more about muscle memory, and we'll do a song once a tour, and I always feel like I can do my bit just a little better. But that's nothing. Sometimes it feels not so much like a challenge, but an obstacle, how little I can see Matt Cameron when I'm playing a drum part with him, but again. . . minor issues."

Singer Anthony Kiedis told us when Klinghoffer first joined the Chili Peppers that he was a natural fit for the group: "He was there, we knew him, we liked him, we respected him as a musician, as an artist in general. The cool thing was when we asked him if he wanted to be in our band, he didn't just say yes. He was like, 'Wow, that's a heavy concept. Let me think about it.' Which really felt good to me, that he wasn't just jumping on for the sake of jumping on, that he wanted to see if that was the right thing to do."

Shinedown's Brent Smith Gets Key To The County During Hometown Show

Shinedown played lead singer Brent Smith's hometown of Knoxville, TN on Sunday (August 28th) where he was surprised with a key to Knox County. WWE star Kane, AKA Mayor of Knox County Glenn Jacobs presented the special gift.

Kane told the crowd, "It's really special to have Shinedown here tonight. This group has No. 1 hits, they're award winning and they've sold over 10 million records, but what's super special about tonight is that this is Knoxville, and lead singer Brent Smith is a 1996 graduate of South Doyle High school right here in Knoxville. So I've got something for him."

Kane held up the key explaining, "This was designed and fabricated by students at South Doyle high school and it is a key to Knox County. Shinedown has entertained millions of people around the world and I really love your inspirational message. So congratulations on all your success and we wish you much continued success in the future."

Smith posted video of the moment on social media writing, "Honestly I am still trying to process our night in Knoxville, and everything that happened at the Thompson-Boling Arena. First of all to everyone in KTOWN that came out to the show THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! It was such a joy to see all of your beautiful faces. I hope everyone had an AMAZING time, I know we did."

He continued, "I must admit I am rarely at a loss for words, but unbeknownst to me, my brothers, Eric, Barry and Zach along with our head of security had a 'little' well 'GIGANTIC' surprise for me, that left me speechless, humbled, and beyond grateful… Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined a moment like this, as I watched KANE take the stage, and proceed to address the crowd, and present me with the Key to the city of my hometown of Knoxville Tennessee."

Gibbard told Rolling Stone… "I kept coming back to it and just basking in her brilliance. It's easy to be mysterious. It's easy to be aloof. It's easy to be cool. It's so much harder to be earnest. And it's so much harder because she's really opening herself up with a lot of these songs."

Metallica Announces Third 'All Within My Hands' Benefit Concert

Metallica has announced its Helping Hands Concert & Auction for December 16th. The band's All Within My Hands non-profit foundation was launched in 2017 to help create sustainable communities by tackling the issues of hunger and workforce education and encouraging volunteerism.

The first All Within My Hands Foundation concert was held in November 2018. In addition to acoustic versions of some of Metallica's classic songs, the band performed covers of tunes from Deep Purple, Nazareth, Blue Oyster Cult, and Bob Seger. The four members of Metallica were joined by a quartet of backing musicians who provided additional percussion, keyboards, strings and vocal harmony.

The event raised $1.3 million, which went to food banks in cities the band played on its then-current "WorldWired" tour and carefully selected community colleges throughout the country.

The band posted a message on Metallica.com, which read:

We're excited to announce the date of our third Helping Hands Concert & Auction as we invite you to join us in Los Angeles on December 16, 2022, for a very special show benefiting All Within My Hands. It has been a few years since we connected in person for this unique event, so we want to get on your calendar now!

We're excited to share all the amazing things the Foundation has accomplished and we are inspired to look toward the future. Of course, we'll cap it all off with a full night of live music!

We hope you will join us for the celebration; keep watching this site and our socials for more details coming soon.

Robert Plant Calls Led Zeppelin 'A Room Full Of Giants'

Robert Plant chatted with Rolling Stone about his past, present, and future -- including his current road dates with Alison Krauss. When pressed about when he realized he had finally "made it," the Led Zeppelin icon explained, "It was when I went to the first rehearsal with the Yardbirds, and I was 19, soon to be 20. I had suggested to Jimmy Page that the drummer that he'd lined up was just nowhere near the dynamism of John Bonham (who) was a totally different thing altogether. . . When the two of us drove down to London in John's mum's van, which we borrowed, in that room, on that afternoon, when we kicked in with a bunch of songs that nobody really knew, 'Train Kept A-Rollin,'' I knew that I was in a room full of giants, really, and that was it."

Plant went on to recall, "By 1973, what happened in that one room had exploded into some of the most adventurous non-rock rock that you could ever wish to find, and it was just the sum of the parts. Those guys were just insanely good. And it was as if everybody had just been waiting for each other with whatever happened prior to that. It was just like, bang!"

He went on to talk about not only the force of Led Zeppelin -- but his own particular talents at the time: "There was a panic of responsibility in the '70s, believe it or not. There was nowhere to hide at all in a four-piece band, and so there were great days and there were days that weren't so good, and I would have to push through. Our itineraries were pretty demanding, and sometimes it really would take it out of my voice. A lot of what I was singing was really at the top of my capacity, right at the sharp end of what I could ever possibly do with the keys that we were playing music in."

Regarding his penchant for following his own muse since John Bonham's death, Robert Plant revealed, "By 1980, that whole idea was long over and gone. From then on, I made a lot of departures, and I have no embarrassment about them. They were all rather silly adventures, but they kept me thinking, or just falling upon melody. Today, I'm three days off playing at the biggest festival in Europe (Glastonbury), and I'm going be pretty melodic."

Robert Plant explained that looking beyond the Western world for inspiration made all the difference in Led Zeppelin's music: "Well, I think we always changed the musical attitudes with every record that we made, therefore, out gave us a bit of a hike to have some continuity over a period of time. Because, we didn't play the same music for nine albums. We were constantly experimenting, and Jimmy (Page) and I traveled through India and Morocco, and Jimmy spent time in Egypt, and his reflections came out in the music. So, I guess we were fortunate because our travels really influenced the way that we wrote."

Arcade Fire's Win Butler Denies Allegations Of Sexual Misconduct

Four women have accused Arcade Fire's Win Butler of sexual misconduct dating back to 2015, however Butler denies the allegations. In a lengthy statement to Pitchfork, Butler said in part, "I have had consensual relationships outside of my marriage . . . I have never touched a woman against her will, and any implication that I have is simply false. I vehemently deny any suggestion that I forced myself on a woman or demanded sexual favors. That simply, and unequivocally, never happened . . ."

He continued, "While these relationships were all consensual, I am very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behavior. Life is filled with tremendous pain and error, and I never want to be part of causing someone else's pain . . ."

Pitchfork reports that three of the women "were devoted Arcade Fire fans between the ages of 18 and 23 at the start of their interactions with Butler, which took place during overlapping periods from 2016 to 2020, when he was between 36 and 39. A fourth person, who is gender-fluid and uses they/them pronouns, claims that Butler sexually assaulted them twice in 2015, when they were 21 and he was 34."

This year has been so wild and I have no explanation for it except that I have you guys to thank. I know that. I want to dedicate this to all of the queer kids out there, who don't feel like they can take up space and inhabit the fullness of who they are, thank you for getting an overtly queer song onto maintstream radio. Thank you for supporting me as the person and the artist that I am. I hope that in that way you have also given that same privilege to yourself. I love you so much, thank you MTV, thank you Columbia Records, thank you guys, thank you, thank you." (1:00 OC: . . .thank you, thank you.)

I really appreciate you, MTV, you know, I worked really hard last year, you know, me and my boy Jack. Thank you for the love, and hopefully I am back up here and I have something better to say. But I love y'all and I'll see you all on the Montero tour." (1:21 OC: . . .the Montero tour.)

In clip four, Lizzo addressed the press during acceptance speech for Video For Good.

In clip five, More Weird Johnny Depp.

Well, first of all, I want to say to everyone in here, God bless you and thank you. Give it to me. Where is it? Who has it, Joe? Oh."

In clip seven, Nicki Minaj wins Best HipHop.

  • "Okay, you guys, I want to make this really quick. Now, earlier I was talking about artists who worked with me at the beginning stage of my career, and I left a few people out, going to name them really quick. We love you. You guys, I'm just so proud of what we made, and I now that every second of this moment that we wouldn't have been able to make this short film if it weren't for you, the fans. Because I wouldn't be able to rerecord my album if it weren't for you. You emboldened me to do that. And I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this... I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you... that my brand new album comes out October 21st. And I will tell you more at midnight." (1:44 OC: . . .more at midnight.)
