Stage Catches Fire During Panic! At The Disco Concert

A small fire broke out on stage during a Panic! At The Disco concert on Wednesday night (9-14) in St. Paul, Minnesota. Video captured by audience members showed the band playing while vocalist, Brendon Urie seemingly unaware, continued to dance around the stage.

Multiple people yelled "Fire! Fire!" until crew members extinguished the small blaze using a fire extinguisher. The flames were near a staircase where the band's technicians were swapping out guitars.

While it's unclear how much of the crowd could directly see the fire, the video shows a large number of people cheered as it was put out.

Weezer To Release New EP Next Week

Weezer is set to release their next SZNZ EP called Autumn. It's one of a four-part series that corresponds to the different seasons, but also stands for the different eras in the band's history.

According to frontman Rives Cuomo, the music included is dance rock. About the other installments, he said, "‘Spring was the easy-breezy side of Weezer, nobody's really going to object to that. Summer was more like '90s alt-rock." He says that's not the kind of music that the band has traditionally been able to get away with, so it makes for a tricky situation.

Autumn is due September 22.

TL;DR:

  • Weezer is set to release their next EP called Autumn on Sept. 22.
  • The music included is dance rock.

'The Essential Foo Fighters' Coming On October 28th

Set for release on October 28th is The Essential Foo Fighters. The double-disc comp is part of Sony's catalogue series of career-spanning collections featuring both greatest hits and deep album cuts. The set, which marks the band's first official release since the death of Taylor Hawkins, features a 21-song tracklist, including such favorites as "Monkey Wrench," "My Hero," "Big Me," "Learn To Fly," and is bookended by the original studio version of "Everlong" with Dave Grohl's classic acoustic performance of the song closing the set.

Last year, while appearing The Kelly Clarkson Show to promote his then-new memoir, The Storyteller - Tales Of Life And Music, Dave Grohl revealed the backstory to the Foos' 1997 signature tune "Everlong," explaining that it captured a perfect moment in time: "I was in love. And one of the things that I loved so much about this person was when we would sing together. It's meant to, sort of, represent that moment. All moments are fleeting. Y'know, if you could be in that moment and think, like, 'If anything could be this good again?'"

Foo Fighters will next perform on September 27th at L.A.'s Kia Forum for the second Taylor Hawkins memorial concert.

The tracklisting to The Essential Foo Fighters is:

"Everlong"
"Making A Fire"
"Times Like These"
"Rope"
"Monkey Wrench"
"My Hero"
"Cold Day In The Sun"
"Big Me"
"Long Road To Ruin"
"Shame Shame"
"Best Of You"
"All My Life"
"The Pretender"
"This Is A Call"
"Waiting On A War"
"Walk"
"Learn To Fly"
"The Sky Is A Neighborhood"
"Breakout"
"These Days"
"Everlong" (acoustic version)

She added video of her and Corgan with their two kids as she prepared to blow out the candles on her birthday cake.

Jimi Hendrix Remembered

It was 52 years ago Sunday (September 18th, 1970) that Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27, about two months shy of his 28th birthday. Five decades later, the events surrounding his death remain sketchy at best, with the only clear fact being that the coroner report stated that Hendrix had asphyxiated in his own vomit, which mainly consisted of red wine. Monika Dannemann, his girlfriend at the time, has long contended that he was alive when placed in the ambulance.

Coming on November 18th is Jimi Hendrix Experience - Los Angeles Forum: April 26, 1969. The new archival set will be issued on double-LP vinyl and CD -- as well as all digital platforms.

Back in 2016, a new rare plant was named after Hendrix. The AP reported San Diego State University claimed that former grad student Mark Dodero, supposedly discovered the plant, which has a tremendous lifespan, while listening to Hendrix's "Voodoo Child. According to the report, "The plant. . . is less than a foot tall with pinkish-white flowers that dies in summer and re-sprouts in fall. Found in Baja California, Mexico, has been christened 'Dudleya hendrixii' or 'Hendrix's liveforever.'"

ODD CIRCUMSTANCES OF HENDRIX'S DEATH

Hendrix aide James "Tappy" Wright claimed in his recent memoir Rock Roadie that Hendrix's final manager Michael Jeffery confessed to killing the legendary guitarist a year after Hendrix's death in September 1970. According to Wright, Jeffery claimed that he plied a semi-conscious Hendrix with enough pills and alcohol to kill him so that he could collect insurance money and not risk Hendrix breaking their management agreement.

Wright, who also roadied for Elvis Presley and Tina Turner, among others, said that Jeffery said in his confession: "I had to do it, Tappy. You understand, don't you? I had to do it. You know damn well what I'm talking about. . . I was in London the night of Jimi's death and together with some old friends . . . we went round to Monika's (Dannemann's) hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth . . . then poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe. I had to do it. Jimi was worth much more to me dead than alive. That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I'd lose everything."

Jeffery, who died in 1973, had told Wright that he had taken out a $2 million policy out on Hendrix, which named him as the chief beneficiary.

The official cause of Hendrix's death was "barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit."

The events surrounding Hendrix's death have always been shady, especially when it comes to how Hendrix was found and who exactly called for an emergency crew -- neither things which are ever out of the ordinary in an O.D. case.

FRIENDS AND FANS REMEMBER JIMI HENDRIX

Eddie Kramer, who was the engineer on the Jimi Hendrix Experience albums Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland, recalled his memories of Hendrix's death: "We had just completed Electric Lady Studios, and we were halfway through a record which was going to be called The Cry Of Love. I spoke to Jimi a week before he died, and he was very positive, and was looking forward to coming back to America. His death was an unfortunate accident, there's no question about that."

Journey guitarist Neal Schon first saw Hendrix play when he was only in his teens, and says that he was simply the greatest guitarist he ever saw perform: "Y'know, if I had to pick one guy, I'd probably say Jimi Hendrix, just because he was so innovative in inventing the electric guitar, almost reinventing it."

Steve Miller told us that even today, Hendrix's talent still manages to floor him: "Y'know, and I was just watching the film of Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival, and just had to stop and sit down and watch and admire what an (laughs) amazing performer he was (laughs) -- just how great."

One of Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley's greatest rock moments was July 17th 1970 -- the day he got to become his idol Jimi Hendrix's roadie: "I roadied for Jimi Hendrix, believe it or not, at his last concert at New York's Randall's Island a couple of months prior to his death. I snuck in backstage and they put me to work. I'm setting up Mitch Mitchell's drums, I mean it was bizarre. Back in those days they didn't have laminates and stick-on passes, it was just free love and free everything. I had hair down to here and yellow hot-pants on and a snakeskin star so obviously they thought I was in one of the bands. So I just walked backstage and looked at the guy and he just let me walk backstage. And when they realized I wasn't in a band they just put me to work."

Aerosmith's Brad Whitford has been a mainstay of the ongoing Experience Hendrix outings, which celebrate and bring to life Hendrix's legendary music live on tour. Whitford spoke about the personal difficulty of mastering Hendrix's style: "Well, first of all, you can never really play it like Jimi played it, anyways, so probably what most of us do is some guys will be incredibly faithful to a recording that exists, but there's a lot of license. Y'know, you have hints of the music, but then there's a lot of improvising going on, adding your own flavor to it, which is, y'know, it's great. That's the great part of it, y'know, you're honoring his music and his songs."

Janie Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix's step-sister and president and CEO of Experience Hendrix and Authentic Hendrix, told us that Hendrix was always good to his father Al and was about to buy the family a new house -- but one a bit different than the one he'd grown up in as a boy: "He was gonna come stay with us, and he told my dad to go look for a house on Mercer Island, which here it's a little island that you can get to via bridge. It was where all the upper-class people lived, and he wanted him to go find a house in that area, and he was going to come stay with us."

Carlos Santana told us that he's always felt a tight connection with Hendrix, whom he met in the late-'60s in San Francisco: "Jimi and I, we went together for a long, long time, and his father came to my house, and I miss them. Y'know, I miss Jimi's father, and I miss Jimi terribly."

Stephen Stills spent hours jamming with Hendrix and recalled that Hendrix turned him on to restringing lefty guitars for righties for a better sound: "Jimi showed me up close and personal, something about the positioning with the pickups made them sound better upside down. But I had a '50s lefty Strat, and that went away. Somebody nabbed it."

Woodstock promoter Michael Lang recalls trying to talk Hendrix out of his closing spot at the legendary 1969 festival: "I think they came in Sunday morning. I asked them if they wanted to go on earlier. And Michael (Jeffery, Hendrix's manager) said 'No, we definitely want to close the show.' I said 'Well, closing the show might not be good idea. It's running approximately 12 hours behind. Chances are you're going to be closing in the morning,' and they sort of insisted on it. Unfortunately, most of the audience was gone by the time Jimi played. But he played an unbelievable set."

Chicago trombonist and co-founder James Pankow recalls the band touring with Hendrix being a life-changing experience: "That was quite an experience. He was a god, if you will. He could snap his fingers and disappear into thin air, in a matter of speaking. He was psychedelic ladyland. Musically he was daring and innovative as anybody was -- if not more. I mean, an African-American who played guitar left-handed, a trio who had a bigger sound than big ensembles, and did music that was not only expressive, but was characteristic of the day."

Band Of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox was asked what he thinks Jimi Hendrix would have accomplished had he not died in 1970: "I get asked that question quite often, and we were gravitating toward more, like, The Rays Of The New Rising Sun. We were gravitating toward classical music, I think. We would've taken those modes into a classical vein. And then he had thought about perhaps maybe going to Juilliard, and there's no telling. (He) always talked about it."

Billie Eilish Forgot Etiquette When She Met The Royal Family

In a recent interview, Billie Eilish reminisced about meeting the British royal family and said it didn't go at all the way she had expected.

Ahead of the big night, she was given an etiquette list that included not shaking hands, not asking questions, not speaking unless spoken to, and how to curtsy. When the then-Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince William and Kate Middleton walked in, she felt so awkward that she suddenly forgot everything. To her surprise, they all actually reached to shake her hand first and she described them as very charming people.

She said it all became very casual and "They were like, ‘What's up? How are you? How's it going?' And I was like, ‘Oh my God.'"

The introductions took place in London during the James Bond film premier for No Time To Die. Eilish and her brother, Finneas co-wrote the theme and were there together.

TL;DR:

  • Billie Eilish reminisced about meeting the British royal family and said she was given an etiquette list that included not shaking hands, not asking questions, not speaking unless spoken to, and how to curtsy.
  • She felt so awkward that she forgot everything when they walked in.

The Cult Drops New Single, LP To Follow Next Month

The Cult has just released "A Cut Inside", the new single from their latest album, Under The Midnight Sun, which drops on October 7th. The new collection, which marks the band's 11th studio set, and their first since 2016's Hidden City.

The LP was produced by Tom Dalgety -- best known for his work with the Pixies, Royal Blood, and Ghost -- and will be issued on the Black Hill Records Imprint.

Frontman Ian Asbury told Blabbermouth how the pandemic inspired the new album, which was formulated with producer Tom Dalgety: "When the world stopped, I had this moment to write in real time, to calculate. I was compelled by this vision, this anomaly, this memory, of being under the midnight sun. Tom helped us bring a new musical shape and frequency to our process."

A while back, Ian Astbury told us that he hopes the Cult offers a sense of positivity and community to fans. "I think there's a lot of violence and anger and aggression out there, there's a lot of people, like, flipping off and saying 'f*** this' and 'f*** that' without really giving any solution. I'd like to think that we've always been a band that's consistently offered lifestyle choices and solutions. We pretty much embrace everybody, anybody that's into us. I don't care whether you come from the hip-hop community, or rock or alternative or dance or whatever. If you embrace what we do, then there's a place for you."

Ghost's Tobias Forge Says Touring Is 'Just Too Crowded'

Ghost hasn't been out touring this year because the market is too crowded with live acts, Tobias Forge recently told Z93's The Morning After. He explained, "There's just simply too much going on right now - so many bands out - and it's just too crowded. And it's hurting everyone, actually . . . Coming out of COVID, everybody's trying to tour at the same time, and, obviously, people cannot see every band that comes through. This is why Ghost decided to "stay out of (this s**t)."

Ghost will instead head out on a U.S. tour with Mastodon and Spiritbox this year and hold off on doing a world tour until 2023. He said, "We are ecstatic about this tour that we're doing right now, that people show up, and that's a lot."

Ghost had originally planned a tour in Europe but said, "Europe is just too weird right now. There's too much going on, and there's a huge energy crisis . . . We're gonna do the whole f**king world in 2023."

Quick Takes: David Lee Roth, Megadeth, Nick Simmons & Wolfmother

  • Following up on his recent re-recording of "Panama," David Lee Roth has issued a newly recorded live-in-studio take of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." Ultimate Classic Rock reported: "The newly released performance features Al Estrada on guitar, Ryan Wheeler on bass and Francis Valentino on drums. The singer cut both tracks during a whirlwind May 3rd, 2022 session at Henson Recording Studio, where he laid down 14 songs in two hours." (Ultimate Classic Rock)

  • Megadeth is back in the Top Five with the release of its 16th album, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! The set entered the Billboard 200 at Number Three after selling "nearly 48,000 equivalent album units earned; of that sum, album sales comprise 45,000, SEA units comprise 3,000 (equaling 3.6 million on-demand streams of the set's songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum." The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! marks the band eighth Top 10 charting album over the past two decades. (AntiMusic)

  • Nick Simmons -- son of Kiss' Gene Simmons -- joined Kiss openers Wolfmother onstage on September 10th during their gig in Gold Coast, Australia to take the lead on the song "Woman." (Blabbermouth)

Chad Smith Guests With Pearl Jam In NYC

Ozzy Osbourne Was Never Comfortable Reuniting With Black Sabbath

Ozzy Osbourne admitted that reuniting with Black Sabbath was hardly ever clear sailing for him. While chatting with Apple Music's Zane Lowe to promote his new album, Patient Number 9 -- on which Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi appears -- Ozzy admitted that being in a band again with Iommi was tough: "The tours were like stepping back for me. It was the same old thing. . . Tony would say, 'It's not an Ozzy show, it's not your band.' And (there was) a lot of unsettlement. I didn't enjoy (it), y'know?"

He went on to explain, "When I left Sabbath, I did okay, I did good. The difference was, I was a singer with Black Sabbath; it was my own band now. If somebody got up my nose, I'd just get rid of them. . . If I don't like a certain sound, I'll say I don't like a certain sound. But you couldn't say that to f***ing them. Oh yeah? Well, f*** off!"

Ozzy felt constrained being back in a band situation where he didn't have the final say: "That's what I meant when I said it was like reverting back. . . It was like, you have a relationship, and you go back to it, and it's like starting the same again."

Ozzy told us not long ago that he was glad Sabbath seemed to be closing things out in a good place: "Black Sabbath has been through the mill over the years, but to come back and be friends with my buddies who I started off with all those years ago, it's a closure for me, a chapter of my life which I can say, 'Well, we came, we saw, we had a good time and now it's over.' I'm glad we ended up happy. Whatever axes we had to grind between us over the years, we got rid of all that and we're friends again."

Blythe also revealed that "Nevermore" and "Grayscale," the two tracks from their upcoming album Omens, will be part of the tour, saying, "Right now we're on the road and we're playing the first two singles most nights...That'll be the interesting thing because we'll be able to see what works. That's one of the most interesting things to me about putting out a new record is trying stuff out live and seeing what connects with an audience."

Ozzy Osbourne Update

OZZY & "SLOWHAND"

Ozzy Osbourne has released a new video for "One Of These Days" -- his 2022 collaboration with Eric Clapton, who is not featured in the clip.

Ozzy's new Patient Number 9 album marks Ozzy's 13th solo set and also features guest spots from such other guitar legends as Ozzy's Black Sabbath bandmate Tommy Iommi, Jeff Beck, Zakk Wylde, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, and Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme.

OZZY ROCKS THE NFL

On Thursday night (September 8th) Ozzy Osbourne performed the halftime show at L.A.'s SoFi Stadium when the Los Angeles Rams took on the Buffalo Bills.

Although only a portion his appearance aired on TV, "The Prince Of Darkness" performed the title track to his new Patient Number 9 album -- with guitarist Zack Wylde joining Osbourne for a run-through of "Crazy Train." Backing Ozzy were producer Andrew Watt on guitar, Chris Chaney on bass, and Tommy Clufetos on drums.

The two-song set marked Ozzy's first U.S. appearance since the 2019 American Music Awards.

Coldplay's Money Problems Nearly Halted World Tour

Chris Martin has revealed Coldplay's extremely successful, Music of the Spheres World Tour almost didn't happen due to a "big financial crisis".

Referring to losses from the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin told The Sun newspaper that when touring wasn't possible, it became financially stressful, which they hadn't had before. They had to make some changes and get financial help that ultimately saved the tour.

He said, "This tour was about trying new things and some of them work and some don't. We are so lucky that we can survive and sustain losses and that's OK."

The band is currently amid a mammoth jaunt in support of their ninth studio album.

Ozzy Osbourne's Patient Number 9' Out Today

Out today (September 9th) is Ozzy Osbourne's latest album, Patient Number 9 -- which marks Ozzy's 13th solo set, which was once again produced by Andrew Watt.

Patient Number 9 features guest spots by such legendary players Black Sabbath bandmate Tommy Iommi, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Jeff Beck, Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan, Zakk Wylde, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme, and former Ozzy bassist and current Metallica member Robert Trujillo.

During a chat with Kerrang!, Ozzy explained the impetus for heading into the studio again: "I've always got to be doing something. I can't sit still, me. I've got attention deficit disorder, so I can't stay in one place too long. I've got to keep moving. (The) Ordinary Man (album) had come together quite quickly. So I said to Andrew, 'Are we gonna do another album?' He just said, 'Yeah!'"

He went on to say, "I never say, ‘Oh I'm going to do an album (about this or that) -- I just co-write with people. It's like a relationship when you're making a record. Andrew and I always start off friendly. We fall out. We get back together again. At the end of the day you get married to it. Then again, if making records was that easy, everyone would be doing it!"

In recent years, Ozzy Osbourne, who's now 73, has dealt with a seemingly non-stop string of health issues -- including a nasty fall, the onset of Parkinson's disease, multiple staph infections, pneumonia, the flu, a burst blood vessel in his eye -- and most recently, "life-altering" surgery that involved removing and realigning pins in his neck and back.

Ozzy has told us before that he's often wondered how he's still alive: "I went to my doctor a while ago and he says to me, 'Y'know what? You're a testament to what the human body can take.' Y'know, Keith Richards, he smokes, he drinks vodka like there's no tomorrow, he used to do heroin, y'know? I don't know how that guy's sucking in air."

Ozzy told us a while back that his life and career have gone further than he ever imagined: "I come from a very low, working class family in Birmingham, England. I would sit on my doorstep thinking, 'Wouldn't it be great if Paul McCartney was to marry my sister, la la la,' and all these daydreams that silly kids have. And what I say to a lot of people, they say what advice can you give me, and I go, 'I had a dream, and most of my dreams came true and more, y'know?' You couldn't invent my story."
