Van Halen's 1993 Live Album Set For Expanded 'Record Store Day' Release

Van Halen's first live album -- 1993's Live: Right Here, Right Now -- will make its vinyl debut on Record Store Day (April 22nd) as a limited edition four-LP set. The double-platinum collection will be limited to 7,500 copies on 180-gram translucent red vinyl and available exclusively at select independent music retailers for $99.98.

Live: Right Here, Right Now kicks off a series of upcoming vinyl releases spotlighting Van Halen's time with Sammy Hagar, which will be overseen by the band's long-time engineer Donn Landee. Additional information about those releases will be announced in the near future.

According to the announcement, "The vinyl collection has all 24 songs from the original CD release, plus three additional live recordings. This marks the first time that audio for two of the tracks -- 'The Dream Is Over' and 'Eagles Fly' -- will be released, as they were previously available only on the DVD version of Live Right Here, Right Now. The third track, 'Mine All Mine,' was recorded in the summer of 1993 during the second leg of the tour and was previously released as part of a European CD maxi-single for a live version of 'Jump.' All tracks from the original live album were newly remastered from the 5150 studio master tapes by Bernie Grundman, who also cut the lacquers."

The late-Eddie Van Halen admitted that Van Halen-type music was all he and his brother Alex knew how to play: "We have never conformed to any trend, and I think that most bands that last are bands that are true to themselves. Y'know, look at the (Rolling) Stones -- they don't all of a sudden start doing rap. The great bands, they stick to what they like, and what moves them. And Van Halen is the type of band -- I'm not putting ourselves in any category, saying we're great -- but we are true to ourselves. We don't change, just because that's the flavor of the month."

Pearl Jam Celebrating The 25th Anniversary Of 'Yield'

Pearl Jam is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the band's classic fifth studio collection, Yield, with a series of release events. The band has just dropped a new spatial audio mix of the 1998 Top Two hit.

According to the press release. "The spatial audio release of Yield was produced and mixed by Josh Evans and Nick Rives, who previously collaborated on all of Pearl Jam's previous spatial audio releases. Evans -- who began working with the band as an assistant engineer and tech during the making of the eponymous Pearl Jam (aka the "Avocado" album) in 2006 -- produced 2020's Gigaton, the first new Pearl Jam studio album in seven years."

As part of the commemoration, Pearl Jam has posted high definition versions of their videos "Given To Fly" and "Do The Evolution," two rehearsal clips from the Single Video Theory documentary, directed by Mark Pellington, which chronicled the making of Yield.

Shot on 16mm film in downtown Seattle in November 1997 over the course of three days, Single Video Theory, was released on VHS and DVD in 1998. The full-length Single Video Theory film will be available in a "newly up-rezzed high-definition edition."

Also coming on Record Store Day (April 22nd), is "Give Way" -- a long sought-after holy grail of Pearl Jam rarities" -- which will be released for the first time ever on vinyl and the first time officially on CD.

Over 30 years after breaking on the national scene, bassist Jeff Ament said that the doors that early fame opened for Pearl Jam were unimaginable: "There were a lot of benefits that came out of getting as big as we did early on. We were stoked to play in front of a couple of hundred people at the local bar, y'know? And so to go from that to a couple of years later, Rolling Stones are asking us to open for them and Neil Young's asking us to be his band and all that kind of stuff. . . it was a trip."

Robert Plant's 'Now And Zen' Turns 35!!!

It was 35 years ago this week -- on leap year, February 29th, 1988 -- that Robert Plant released his fourth solo album, Now And Zen. The album, which was a massive hit for the Led Zeppelin frontman, peaked at Number Six on the Billboard 200, featured a trio of MTV hits -- including "Heaven Knows," "Tall Cool One" -- both of which, featured guitar by Jimmy Page -- and the ballad "Ship Of Fools."

The album showed Plant making peace with his Zeppelin past -- not only with the inclusion of Page on the singles, but with "Tall Cool One" sampling liberally from several Zeppelin classics -- along with Plant singing lines from "When The Levee Breaks." On May 14th, 1988 Plant, after performing a solo set, reunited with Led Zeppelin Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary Concert at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Robert Plant's 1988 tour behind Now And Zen was his first to feature multiple dips into the Zeppelin catalogue. He recalled at the time that he had already established a career away from the band, which allowed him to periodically sing the old favorites without being defined by them: "What I'm going to do on the road, is I'm going to play Led Zeppelin songs occasionally, when I feel like it. I'm gonna try and avoid being one of those, kind of, cabaret artists that has to rely upon a big back catalogue. I think I've distanced myself enough from Led Zeppelin now to bear to actually play Led Zeppelin songs without feeling too bad about it."

Robert Plant explained that by moving forward and experimenting with his music he was staying truer to Led Zeppelin's ideal than just becoming a nostalgia act: "You have to be creative and imaginative and move on. And I think the great essence of Led Zeppelin is the creativity and imagination that developed with each project. And a project is a project. It's not just going back and visiting the past. It's moving forward. I don't see ups being a stadium act or whatever it is, going 'round and 'round, makin' everybody feel great playin' the hits."

Now And Zen's lead single "Heaven Knows" scored Robert Plant a Number One hit on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.

Its followup, "Tall Cool One," went on to hit Number One on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

The album's third single, "Ship Of Fools" topped out at Number Three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Godsmack Releases Final Album 'Lighting Up The Sky'

Out today (Friday, Feb. 24) is the new Godsmack album Lighting Up the Sky. It's the group's eighth overall and first in five years. It's also going to be Godsmack's last album, according to the band members. Frontman Sully Erna tells us that after 26 Top 10 Billboard Mainstream Rock chart singles -- 12 of which have hit No. 1 (including 'Surrender' from the new album) -- he and his bandmates are satisfied they've done all they can: "We've enjoyed decades of doing this in the studio and sacrificed a lot of time...If you think about it, that's exactly what we've done; maybe we just get to the point where we've pushed so hard for so long... and we just got burned out and we just knew that we had to start, how do I say it, treating ourselves based on the amount of time we've been out there and our ages and we can't kind of grind like that anymore -- nor do we want to, because it's exhausting...At some point, y'know, you got to kind of know you've got to start tailoring this thing so you can also enjoy all these things that we've earned and to be able to enjoy, even if it's just family and time with them. It's just time."

Erna is quick to add, however, that Godsmack is not breaking up. The group will be touring in support of Lighting Up the Sky and then in future years play shows to spotlight its career: "This isn't ending. We're just ending one chapter in our lives but we're opening a whole new chapter for our sunset years, to be able to create now a greatest hits show and enjoy the rest of our career playing live, which his really what the reward is for all the world that we do in the studio... We're gonna build the show as big and beautiful as we can make it and honor the best of the best songs we've written, that had the most success, and the ones the fans have chosen to be their favorites."

Godsmack recorded Lighting Up the Sky in Florida with producer Andrew Murdock who worked on the group's multi-platinum Godsmack and Awake albums as well in 1998 and 2000, respectively. The new album includes several references to Godsmack's past, in fact -- most specifically on the title track, which incorporates a riff from "Moon Baby," the first song on the band's self-titled major label debut. The song "Best of Times," meanwhile, is a "thank you letter" from Erna to his bandmates for their dedication over the years. Making the album, Erna says, "It really got emotional for us. We sat in the studio a few different times and shared tears and just talked about how fulfilling it feels and what a bittersweet it is. But all in all we have no regrets, and we feel pretty complete at this point."

Godsmack hits the road starting April 21 in Santiago, Chile. The group begins a May run of U.S. shows with I Prevail opening, starting May 4 in Denver and including the Sonic Temple Art + Music Festival on May 25 in Columbus, Ohio. Godsmack plans to cover North America primarily this year, then eyeball other territories during 2024.

Don Henley accepted the award on behalf of the band and said in his acceptance speech, "I appreciate this very much, We are three shows into our 51st year as a band and touring entity — and feeling every one of them. But we feel very fortunate."

Dave Grohl also made an appearance at the ceremony to honor Foo Fighters manager John Silva, who won the Personal Manager of the Year award.

Tom Morello Wrote A Song With Post Malone; Could Be The Next 'Beat It'

Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello has revealed that he wrote a song with Post Malone, and he thinks it could be the next "Beat It."

During an interview on the Allison Hagendorf Show Podcast, he said, "We worked out a pretty sick jam. To me it felt like it could be, for him, like his 'Beat It' by Michael Jackson — a big pop star paired with Eddie Van Halen and made something that no-one had expected. ‘This could be your 'Beat It,' dude!'" He added, "He just won't finish the song."

As to how the collaboration came about, Morello said, "We went into the studio together one night. I had heard that he was a fan of rock and so I went by, and he is a lovely dude. First of all, he's just a lovely, lovely person. He is trippy. You know how some people have guitar techs, or drum techs... he had a Coors Light tech! Laughs There was a guy whose sole job apparently was just make sure there is a stack of cold Coors Light… It took about four hours of sitting around with Coors Light before we did any recording."

Not much progress appears to have been made after that night and Morello still encourages the rapper to finish it up whenever he sees him. He explained, "I'm like, ‘You're still dropping the ball on that one.' He's like, ‘Yeah, man, I'm gonna do that.' I'm like, ‘Okay," he adds with a laugh, enthusing, "It's sick!"

Disturbed Plans To 'Bring Out All Their Toys' On The 'Take Back Your Life Tour'

David Draiman says that Disturbed chose to do a headlining tour so that they can "bring out all their toys."

When asked by Beef Vegan why the band chose not to play festivals this summer like they normally do he said, "We love both, but truth be told is that when you finally decide to headline, you can bring out all your toys, and you don't have to share it with anybody.

"When you're in a festival environment, you have a whole bunch of really high-caliber bands who are performing at the top of their game, and they're trying to bring as much as they can all collectively fit on that deck. And it gets challenging. So when you're doing your thing and that's the primary focus, it really opens up the possibilities."

Disturbed kicks off the Take Back Your Life Tour on April 24th.

Everybody's path is so different, and it's fascinating to learn how every musician came to music and developed their study of it over time."

Gavin Rossdale Is Being Sued By Bush's Original Drummer

Gavin Rossdale is being sued by Bush's original drummer Robin Goodridge. The former bandmember claims he was kicked out of the group abruptly and without cause.

Blast reports that Goodridge agreed to join Rossdale for Bush's 25th anniversary tour in 2019 but was booted from the band before its first stop. According to the drummer's lawsuit, Rossdale refused to pay him for any of the tour's profits and violated Bush's trademark agreement.

In addition to damages, Goodridge is seeking a permanent injunction enjoining Rossdale and Bush, Inc. from using the trademark Bush.

The band's original lineup, Rossdale, Goodridge, guitarist Nigel Pulsford and bassist Dave Parsons parted ways in 2001, but according to the court filing, each founding member maintains 25% of the registered trademark "Bush."
