Top 30 Hair Metal Albums Ranked

The editors of Loudwire have ranked the "Top 30 Hair Metal Albums." The new list features Motley Crue's 1983 Shout At The Devil at Number One, Def Leppard's fourth album, 1987's Hysteria coming in at Number Two, with Ratt's 1984 classic Out Of The Cellar sitting at Number Three. Coming in at Number Four is Skid Row's 1989 self-titled set debut, with Bon Jovi's 1986 multiplatinum behemoth, Slippery When Wet, rounding out the Top Five.

Poison scored two albums on the new list with their 1986 debut set, Look What The Cat Dragged In, coming in at Number 10 and its 1988 followup, Open Up And Say... Ahh! sitting at Number 24.

Poison frontman Bret Michaels, who was born and raised in Pennsylvania, has often been looked upon as one of the true survivors from the infamous '80s hair metal scene of Hollywood's Sunset Strip. He explained that a huge part of his success was believing in himself and Poison's talent: "So I go to L.A. -- we're starving -- and the person I bet on, I bet on myself. We have no money, and we would get offered these publishing deals; they would hear songs like 'Every Rose (Has It's Thorns)' that have sold seven, eight, 10 million copies of these singles, and people were like, 'Hey, we'll give you. . . ' Now, 'member, this is a starving musician I'm 'starving' starving and they offer -- they say, 'We're gonna give you 100 grand and we'll own your publishing' -- and you're going, I didn't even know what 100 grand was then -- I'm like, 'That's a lot of money.' But then I bet on myself, and I said no. I want to be in control of my career, I wanna be in control of my music, where it goes, what it sounds like -- for better or for worse."

Brian Johnson Recalls The Love Fest At Taylor Hawkins Tribute

AC/DC frontman admitted the initial Taylor Hawkins memorial concert at London's Wembley Stadium was just as emotional offstage as the fans thought. Johnson just published his latest book and first official memoir titled, The Lives Of Brian.

At the September 3rd Taylor Hawkins tribute at Wembley Stadium, Brian Johnston took the stage with Foo Fighters, Metallica's Lars Ulrich on drums, with the Darkness' Justin Hawkins joining in for a double dose of AC/DC classics -- "Back In Black" and "Let There Be Rock."

We caught up to Brian Johnson and asked him to descibe the scene for what fans didn't get to see: "Aw -- y'kiddin' me? It was brilliant! I never felt so much love backstage from everybody for one man and his family were there and were hugged -- and his sons. Just old friends. . . Y'know, I saw Joe Walsh comin' offstage and I went 'Joe Walsh! You didn't tell me you were here!' And he came over and he hugged us and he said, 'Brian Johnson -- now I know everything gon' be alright!' I was ready to rock, and y'know, young Lars (Ulrich) was on the drums there. Ah -- it meant a lot to me and, y'know, young Dave (Grohl) was just sittin', smilin' his ass off."

Matt Skiba Reveals That He Recorded An Unreleased Album With Blink-182

Matt Skiba revealed that he recorded "eight or nine" songs with Blink-182, which may never be released, now that Tom DeLonge has rejoined the band.

In an interview with Louder he said, "There's almost a whole album's worth of stuff. It was supposed to be an EP and it just kept going, and going." They finished around the time that Mark Hopper was diagnosed with cancer.

In case anyone thinks Skiba is smarting over the shelving of this material, he insists that he couldn't be happier to see Blink's classic line-up reunited.

He said, "I'm proud of the work that I did with them. We had a great time... There's no bad blood, there's no drama, there's no nothing. It's just the next chapter in the band's life."

Skiba continues singing with Alkaline Trio.

Halestorm's Arejay Hale Opens Up About Touring

In a new interview with Australia's Serpent Tongue, Halestorm drummer Arejay Hale opened up about the physical preparation that goes into touring. He said, "As a drummer, I try to think like an athlete. I try to have a very high-protein diet. I try to keep it very plant-heavy and nutrient-heavy. And that's been another factor of keeping me not only physically able to continue to do the physically taxing task of playing a 90-minute show every night behind the drums and slam wood into metal repeatedly."

He continued, "But it also helps my mental state, 'cause touring also can be grueling. You have every strike against you. You've got lack of sleep. You've got constantly flying from city to city. It's so easy to neglect your physical health, which then can affect your mental health."

He went on, "Just to keep myself balanced… The one thing I know I have really good control over is my diet and exercise. I try to really make sure that I stay mobile, stay loose, stay healthy as much as possible, and I try to pass that on to my younger musicians out there."

Hale also said that young musicians should "party" and "have fun" while touring. He explained, "Get it out of your system, because when you hit your 30s, you're gonna have to tighten it up. Laughs And I get more joy out of touring knowing that I'm not getting wasted every night. I'm eating healthy. I'm exercising. I'm stretching. I'm meditating. I'm doing everything I possibly can to keep myself balanced. And it's been working. It's been keeping me maintained. And I also have the pandemic to thank for that, 'cause that was the first time I actually had time to really focus on rehabbing my body and my joints to be able to withstand the punishment I give them every night."

Motley Crue & Def Leppard Roll Out 2023 International Dates

Fresh off their North American "Stadium Tour," Motley Crue and Def Leppard are paring off next years a set for a 28-date South American and European trek dubbed the "World Tour." The news comes on the heels of the massive success of 2022's North America's "Stadium Tour" with under-bill performers Poison and Joan Jett & The Heartbreakers, which grossed over $173 million during its 36-date run.

The new tour, which kicks off in February and wraps in July, will take in stops in Mexico, Columbia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, England, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Ireland.

Motley Crue issued a joint statement, which reads:

We had an incredible time playing 'The Stadium Tour' in North America this summer and we truly can't wait to take the show around the globe with 'The World Tour' in 2023. Crueheads in Latin America and Europe: Get ready! We're coming for you next and can't wait to finally see all of you out there again next year!

Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott added:

After finally getting back on the road and having a monumental summer tour in the U.S. and Canada this year, we're beyond thrilled to be bringing this massive stadium tour to major cities all over the world, and kicking off Europe in Sheffield where it all started for us 45 years ago. We're looking to forward to seeing you out there, somewhere soon!

Nikki Sixx told us that Motley Crue always has one goal whenever it goes onstage: "If we're the greatest we can be, that's exciting, and that's what I believe that Mick (Mars) and Tommy (Lee) and Vince (Neil) all want too. They want to be the greatest rock band that Motley Crue can be. That's why we always try to come up with new, twisted versions of our production, and I think our shows are so potent and, I think, contagious. It's fun and it's horrifying all at the same time."

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen told us he and his bandmates always look forward to playing their hits out on the road: "Every night when someone's singing along -- especially when there's a lot of young kids there, 16-year-olds and that -- it is fresh, actually makes you feel really good when there's a whole new breed of people just singing away to songs that you've done. It doesn't really matter whether it's a new song or an old song, it's still our song, so it's a huge compliment. It really is, it's the best thing in the world."

Quick Takes: Motley Crue, Paul Stanley, AC/DC, Myles Kennedy & James Hetfield

  • Motley Crue is promising a major announcement this morning (Thursday, October 20th), which many are expecting to be news about the band's 2023 plans. Multiple sources are reporting the rumor that guitarist John 5 might be subbing for Mickey Mars, who's been battling health issues over the years.
    • John 5 has posted online that his replacing Mars is "just a rumor." (MetalWani)

  • Paul Stanley had some pointed words for both Chris Cuomo and Kanye West. The Kiss frontman tweeted a response to the troubled rapper's antisemitic remarks on the NewsNation program Cuomo. Stanley posted: "If you saw someone on the street who was clearly disturbed, speaking nonsensically and spewing hate speech WOULD YOU INTERVIEW THEM ON TV?? This is a dangerous, self-serving version of click bait that legitimizes the ravings of someone who's mentally ill. We all deserve better."
    • Stanley went on to write: "Let Me Be Clear. I don't advocate 'silencing' views. Everyone has the right to speak their opinion but not everything that happens or is said deserves the same coverage. Televising or putting in print someone's views needs to take into account the credibility of the speaker."

  • Brian Johnson recalled the one-and-only time he crossed paths with AC/DC's Bon Scott -- the man he would replace in 1980. In his new memoir, The Lives Of Brian, set for release on October 25th, Johnson writes about how in the early-1970's, his band Geordie was playing on the same bill as Scott's pre-fame band Fang, who were the opening act: "He was one of the wildest-looking cats that I'd ever seen. Coconut-bob hair. Abe Lincoln beard. He looked like an elf. But, f*** me, the guy could sing. What he was singing wasn't rock 'n' roll though. It was more like. . . prog-folk. Along the lines of Jethro Tull's Living In The Past. Only proggier. And folkier. At one point, he even whipped out a wooden recorder and started to play in a way that would have brought tears to the eyes of Mrs. Patterson, my old teacher."
    • Johnson went on to wrote, "I never saw Bon again, I'm very sorry to say. But it's so strange to me that our fates entwined on that one night on the Torquay seafront in the freezing cold. I wish that I could have got to know him better." (Ultimate Classic Rock)

  • During a chat with Music Radar, Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy sang the praised of Metallica's James Hetfield. Kennedy who also sings and plays guitar, remains awestruck at the Metallica leader's prowess at handling two major duties for his band at the same time: "That's the thing that amazes me; I watch a guy like James Hetfield and it's amazing how he can come up with those very rhythmic riffs and then sing over the top the way he does. I find that very inspiring. I find that occasionally, there will be something that will stump me, but with enough time, if I just put in the time and keep practicing and doing it over and over and over, I'll generally be able to land on my feet." Slash Says Guns N' Roses Have A 'Couple Of Epic' Songs To Release

Slash says Guns N' Roses have a "couple of epic" songs left to release. Slash said in a radio interview, "I want to go in and cut a whole brand new record at some point, probably sooner than later. But other than that, we have stuff that's still got to come out. So that's gonna be coming out piecemeal over the next… few months or something like that. So that's basically it. We have one more tour left to do next summer, and then that'll free us up to be able to go in and work on a new record."

Slash also revealed that the band recorded songs during the pandemic, saying, "There's a handful of those songs that we absolutely fixed up and did when we were in lockdown. Those have yet to be released, so those are gonna come out."

He continued, "... We're just gonna put out like one or two songs, and another one or two songs, and I think that's gonna be pretty much all of them. I'm not sure exactly how many we did in total."

Judas Priest's Hall Of Fame Set 'Might Kick Start' K.K. Downing Reconciliation

Judas Priest's bassist Ian Hill says the band's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame appearance could be a catalyst for reconciliation with former guitarist K.K. Downing — or it could make things worse. Hill told The Detroit Metro Times, "Never say never, put it like that. Downing's gonna be there at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame anyway. He's gonna get up and play some songs with us there."

He continued, "It might kick-start something, I don't know. On the other hand, he might pull us all apart."

Post Malone Injured During Concert In Atlanta

Post Malone fell and twisted his ankle on stage this week during a concert in Atlanta. He remained on his back for a bit and then finally got up and told the crowd that he tripped on the little holes in the middle of the stage where fire comes out of.

He told the audience, "So, if my dance moves aren't 100 percent, you gotta forgive me tonight, ladies and gentleman. I'ma do my best."

While Post played it off cool as a minor twist, concert attendees noticed that he was struggling to walk on stage as the show proceeded.

Kurt Cobain's Estate Slams 'Unauthorized' Film Last Days

Kurt Cobain's estate has slammed the adaptation of Gus Ban Sant's dramatized film Last Days by London's Royal Opera House, saying that the production is an "unauthorized attempt" to continue exploiting the fictionalized story the late singer's final days.

The estate said in a statement, "Last Days has been created and written without permission. This show, just like the movie, is an unauthorized attempt to benefit from the brief meeting set up with Kurt and Gus Van Zant. This one meeting has been exploited for profit for thirty years now and enough is enough."

A spokesperson for the Royal Opera House issued the following response, "The Royal Opera's production of Last Days is adapted from Gus Van Sant's cult film of the same name, released in 2005. It is a fictionalized account, and was produced with the permissions of Gus Van Sant and HBO."
