After Years Of Fighting, Billy Corgan Praises D’Arcy Wretzky’s Contributions To Smashing Pumpkins’ Success

Despite his past tensions with former Smashing Pumpkins’ bassist D’Arcy Wretzky, Billy Corgan recently praised her crucial musical contributions in his Substack video marking the 30th anniversary of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Wretzky left the Pumpkins in 1999, and her involvement in the band’s 2018 reunion tour ultimately fell through, adding to the acrimony between her and Corgan. Acknowledging their disagreements, Corgan highlighted Wretzky’s influential opinions on the band’s direction and her impact on their success during their original lineup’s seminal albums. “Her contribution, kind of spiritually, emotionally – I think had a lot to do with the success of the band,” Corgan said of Wretzky. “I would never take that away from her, because I really did respect her musical opinion. We managed to disagree about everything else, but in music, when we would align, it was powerful.” Corgan has a series of special Mellon Collie anniversary shows planned with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in November.
