Out Today: Rush's 40th Anniversary 'Moving Pictures' Box Set

The wait is over for Rush fans with today's (April 15th) release of the 40th Anniversary edition of the band's breakthrough 1981 album, Moving Pictures. The new anniversary package has been issued in six distinct configurations, including the Super Deluxe Edition, three-CD Deluxe Edition, five-LP Deluxe Edition, one-LP Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, and Dolby Atmos Digital Edition.

According to the original press release for the box set:

The Super Deluxe Edition includes three CD's, one Blu-ray Audio disc, and five high-quality 180-gram black vinyl LP's. The set encompasses the Abbey Road Mastering Studios 2015 remastered edition of the album for the first time on CD, along with two discs of previously unreleased and newly restored bonus live content newly mixed from the original analog live multi-tracks by Rush's original producer, Terry Brown, featuring the band's complete, unreleased Toronto concert from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, on March 25th, 1981 -- titled Live In YYZ 1981.

The fourth bonus disc is a Blu-ray Audio disc with the core album newly mixed from the original multi-tracks in Dolby Atmos (a Rush catalog first!), Dolby TrueHD 5.1, and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound as done by noted producer/engineer Richard Chycki, alongside the previously available PCM Stereo mix.

Also included on the Blu-ray are four bonus videos: a brand-new video for "YYZ" plus three remastered vintage promo videos for "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight," and "Vital Signs." All of the vinyl in the Super Deluxe Edition has been cut via half-speed Direct to Metal Mastering (DMM) (another Rush catalog first!) on five 180-gram audiophile LP's.

Moving Pictures was originally released on February 12th, 1981. The set, which followed the previous year's Permanent Waves, peaked at Number Three on the Billboard 200 albums chart, stayed in the Top 10 for 13 weeks, and remains the trio's most popular and commercially successful outing to date. To date, Moving Pictures has sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone.

The album's third track, "YYZ," was nominated for a Best Rock Instrumental Performance Grammy. The title is the IATA Airport Code for Toronto Pearson International Airport. It is played repeatedly in Morse code at the beginning of the song.

The track "The Camera Eye" was the last Rush song to clock in at over 10 minutes. Until it was brought back on the 2010/2011 "Time Machine" tour, it had not been played live since 1983. The "Time Machine" tour saw Rush perform Moving Pictures in its entirety.

1981's Moving Pictures remains Rush's biggest album to date, while "Tom Sawyer" remains their best-known song. Alex Lifeson recalled for us the impact the record had on the Canadian band's career at the time: "That took us up to the next level. After the release of that album, we were headlining everywhere we were going, and, y'know, our audiences increased by a large percentage. And it just gave us that much of a push forward into what was coming."

Not too long ago, Rush's late, great drummer and lyricist Neil Peart spoke with George Stroumboulopoulos and shed light on the importance of the Moving Pictures sessions: "We had been together for six years and had had enough success that the industry wasn't leaning on us anymore about what we were going to do. And there was a real maturity (and) coming of age for us as a band, because we had been doing so much experimenting of all kinds as individual instrumentalists and as a group of instrumentalists. . . There was nothing self-indulgent, or so-called pretentiousness about it. It was true boyish enthusiasm that was involved in creating all those things."

Geddy Lee told us that having a legion of fans following you is still a pretty heady experience: "It's a tremendous compliment to be told that you've inspired someone or influenced someone musically, or in any aspect of life -- and beyond that, y'know, you really don't know what to say. Y'know, it's a nice thing, and it makes you feel like whatever you're doing has a little more validity, I guess."

Machine Gun Kelly Says Pete Davidson Will Be In His Wedding

Machine Gun Kelly is already making a list of groomsmen he wants in his upcoming wedding ceremony to Megan Fox and one of them is Pete Davidson.

Kelly and the Saturday Night Live star are longtime friends. In fact Kelly calls their friendship a "bromance." In an interview with Howard Stern, he joked that during the wedding, they should give Davidson a microphone for commentary.

A wedding date has not been announced, but since Machine Gunn Kelly is on tour through October, speculation is that it will be sometime after that.

TL;DR:

  • Machine Gun Kelly says Pete Davidson will be a groomsmen in his wedding.
  • Calls their friendship a bromance.
  • He joked that they should give Davidson a microphone for commentary.

Slipknot's Corey Taylor Halts Show To Make Sure Fan Gets Medical Attention

Slipknot's Corey Taylor brought the band's set to a halt while performing in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada on Monday (April 11th) after he noticed a fan who had been injured in the pit and he alerted medical personnel. Fan videos show Taylor instructing the crowd to "back up" and "give them room," adding, "They can't breathe if everybody's around them."

Loudwire.com reports that the band were performing the 14th song of the set, the Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses cut "Vermillion," when the incident happened.

After the concertgoer was attended to, Taylor said, "Make some noise for the medics. Let's make sure they get out. We've got a clear path right here. As soon as they're safe, we're starting this f**king thing again . . . "

Slipknot continue on their Knotfest Roadshow Tour with a show tonight (Thursday, April 14th) in Saskatoon, SK.

Kirk Hammett Still A Die-Hard Classic Rock Fan

Metallica's Kirk Hammett is but one of the many rock legends interviewed for Classic Rock magazine's 300th issue, and shed light on his love for both the publication -- along with his favorite musicians the publication covers.

Hammett explained, "I don't read articles about myself! I read about what Jeff Beck was doing in 1971 with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, what David Bowie was doing in 1976 in L.A. I read to find out about Spooky Tooth, what was going on with Mountain when they were at Woodstock. I'm a product of the '70s. The foundation of all Metallica music is '70s hard rock. It stops at the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal."

He went on to say, "I'm a fan of so much '60, '70s stuff. I love reading about Tangerine Dream, Neu!. I read Prog, also. I only discovered prog about five years ago. I was never into it. I spent a lot of time listening to jazz, bossa nova, blues, classical, soul, and reggae."

Hammett touched upon the pros and cons of being a budding rock musician in 2022: "It is harder for these younger bands to get their music out there. I'll tell you one thing: because of covid there's upwards of half a billion new guitar players in the world, bro. That bodes very well for the future of music. It was inspirational for me just knowing there's gonna be that many more musicians in the world trying to make great music. There's so much disorganization in the world right now, so much division. Music brings people together. Music organizes people and their thoughts. Maybe because there's more musicians it'll make for a better future for everyone. I'm just being optimistic (laughs)."

Kirk Hammett was always amazed when his heroes actually became his friends. Not too long ago he shed light on his unique friendship with the Ramones' late-guitarist Johnny Ramone: "Johnny was a big influence early in my life, and later in my life too. Y'know, I became pretty good friends with Johnny about, I don't know, 1996 or something, and, yeah, it's hard to articulate, but I just wish he was still around. I mean, 'cause later on he was a really big influence in my life too, just hanging out with him."

Metallica next performs on April 27th in Santiago, Chile.

The band's next North American date is set for May 27th in Napa, California at BottleRock at Napa Valley Expo.

Jimmy Page Hints At New Projects, Robert Plant Rolls Out Summer Dates

Fans have been waiting for new Jimmy Page music since 1998's Walking Into Clarksdale collaboration with Robert Plant. During a new chat with Classic Rock magazine, the Led Zeppelin co-founder was pressed about what he's been doing creatively since lockdown began. Page said, "Archiving, working on various paths and routes of projects, but I'm not going to say what the projects are. There's various things I'm working towards. It's not just one thing, it's multiple things, and I don't want to even give a hint, because if. . . you give a one-sentence sound bite, and then if it doesn't materialize it's like: 'Why didn't you do a solo album?' So I don't want to say what it is that I've got planned, because I don't want to give people the chance to misinterpret it."

Page remained cryptic as he went on to say, "I really can't put on record what the new record is. I'll leave it to your imagination. The thing is there are so many ways I could present myself. . . within a space of time (laughs). I've come across all these various projects I did. And one of the things I did recently is listen to a recording I made of the Marrakesh Folk Festival, with the tribes coming in from all over Morocco, in 1975. It's fascinating. Tribal stuff passed on from father to son and kept alive because of the folk festivals, Essaouira, and all the rest. Where there are people who want to hear the Berbers. I certainly do, it's good for the soul."

Jimmy Page recently explained the benefits of making music in collaboration: "The fact of playing with other, y'know, personalities -- musically, so, to speak -- can be an inspiration and you take it in an organic sense, the same way that we got here at this point. Y'know, working with the Egyptians, the Moroccans, and y'know, the Celtic areas. I mean, you can be inspired my working with these people; and that's basically what it is. If you get in a room and there's a particular, sort of, identity of sound coming from somewhere, and you can get inspired by it, and who knows what comes next? But up till this point, it's been pretty good." SOUNDCDUE

Alice Cooper Fall Dates On The Books

Alice Cooper has just rolled out a 20-city North American fall tour. Cooper -- who plays on Thursday (April 14th) in Calgary with special guests Buckcherry -- kicks off the autumn run on September 7th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and carries on through October 8th when he wraps the year up in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alice Cooper told us that the days of blowing an audience's mind with stage theatrics have really changed over the decades: "I don't think you can shock an audience anymore, really. I mean, CNN's more shocking than anything Marilyn Manson or I can do, because (laughs), they used to hang me onstage, now you see people really getting hung on TV. So, the idea is just to bombard the audience with vaudeville-type of burlesque comedy -- but make sure the music is the basis of everything. I mean, you can't put icing on the cake without the cake. So a 10-hour rehearsal is nine hours on the music, and one hour on the theatrics."

Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'Unlimited Love' Debuts At Number One

As expected, the latest Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album, Unlimited Love, debuted this week at Number One, marking the band's first chart-topper since 2006's Stadium Arcadium. Billboard reported, the album, "bows with 97,500 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 7th, according to Luminate. . . Of Unlimited Love's 97,500 equivalent album units earned, album sales comprise 82,500 (it's the top-selling album of the week); SEA units comprise 14,500 (equaling 18.96 million on-demand official streams of the set's songs); and TEA units comprise 500."

Unlimited Love marks the return of guitarist John Frusciante, who leaft the band in 2009. Heroin addiction originally took Frusciante out of action in 1993, but he rejoined the Peppers six years later, playing on 1999's massively successful Californication and 2002's By The Way. He left again after 2009's Stadium Arcadium, making some 14 studio LP's during an eclectic solo run.

Drummer Chad Smith told us a while back that he never imagined that his career would go as far as it has: "Never in my wildest dreams if you had come up to me and said, 'Hey, y'know, you're gonna move to California and join the Chili Peppers and then 25 years later you're gonna be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and you're gonna sell millions of records and travel all over the world and blah blah blah blah blah. . .' I'd have just said, 'You are hiiiiiigh.' I can't really comprehend it too much."

The key to the Chili Peppers remains the bond shared by frontman Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea. Not too long ago we asked Kiedis to sum up what it is about his friendship with Flea that has inspired all this incredible music: "Oh, I don't know because I'm a little too deeply in the forest to really see the trees like that. I can tell you how it hasn't changed. We still love each other with all of our hearts. Like with any long-term, intimately close friendship like that, you have a lot of highs and lows and this is just one of those marriages that persists."

It's exciting. Every time I put the All Starr's together, we end up in a room in some country -- we like to call it 'rehearsals' and, we all know what we're supposed to do, we get on with it, and we have a lot of fun. The Black Crowes Salute 1972 With New EP

The Black Crowes will release a new covers EP on May 4th, via Amazon Music, titled 1972. Glide magazine reported the band tracked the tunes back in January 2022 at L.A.'s famed Sunset Sound, with the project's first single -- a new take on the Temptations' "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" out now. The other songs on the set are the Rolling Stones' "Rocks Off," T-Rex's "The Slider," Rod Stewart's "You Wear It Well," Little Feat's "Easy To Slip," and David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream."

Crowes frontman Chris Robinson said of the new collection, "The year 1972 was a watershed moment, some of the greatest rock and roll songs ever made came out of that year. To get our band back together in the studio, it had to be a celebration of rock n' roll. This record is about love and devotion to something that makes us feel good. We hope that it makes fans around the world feel the same."

On May 4th at 10:00 pm ET, the Black Crowes will be performing the EP live from the historic Whiskey a Go-Go in Los Angeles via Amazon Music's channel on Twitch. The date also marks the 50th anniversary of a legendary Little Feat performance at the famed venue in 1972.

Contrary to popular belief, Rich Robinson and his older brother, Chris, were not retro-obsessed Southern rock apostles while growing up: "Chris and I never sat down and said, 'We're gonna be in a band.' Like, we just started doin' it. We went through our little punk rock phase for about six months, and then it's easy to grow out of that -- 'cause we grew up in a really rich musical household, 'cause of my dad. So once we started getting into R.E.M., which spoke to us, 'cause we weren't into southern rock. We never associated ourselves with that. R.E.M. spoke to us, more because it was so unique sounding. When I first heard 'Radio Free Europe' on the radio, I was like. . . I'd never heard anything like that."

"It means the world to me, not in like, 'I need everything to go to number one,' but especially 'Drunk,' It's a wonderful feeling and to be still welcomed into the country world and to have a song that I wrote have this success and that I get to sing on it with my friend. Ozzy posted a new Ross Halfin photo of him on social media, with a message to fans reading: "I'm so happy to let everyone know that I finished my new album this week and delivered it to my label Epic Records. I'll be sharing all the information about the album and its upcoming release with you in the next several weeks."

The still-untitled new album follows 2020's Ordinary Man, and features guests spots by such legendary players as Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Jeff Beck, Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan, Zakk Wylde, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme, Metallica's Robert Trujillo -- and Black Sabbath co-founder Tony Iommi guesting for the first time on a solo Ozzy project.

Ozzy Osbourne admitted to us a while back he's never been one for conventional lyrics: "I'm not one of these guys that can write about boy-meets-girl and, I mean, it's got to mean something to me. I don't write all the lyrics, but I have to say, 'Well, y'know, isn't that strange that that happened when this happened,' and I'll get going, y'know?"
