Vince Neil Performs At The Grand Ole Opry

There's a first time for everything -- and on Tuesday (August 2nd) Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil made his debut at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.

Blabbermouth reported Neil, who currently calls Nashville home, took the stage and tackled the Crue's 1985 ballad "Home Sweet Home" with the hallowed venue's house band. He was also joined on vocals by singer-songwriter Cherish Lee -- the daughter of country legend Johnny Lee and Dallas actress Charlene Tilton.

Prior to performing the Crue classic, Vince Neil told the audience: "I moved to Tennessee seven years ago, and I live in Franklin out by Leiper's Fork, and I see some friends and family out here, and I want to thank you guys for coming out. This is really a chilling thing -- place to be standing up here, y'know?"

Motley Crue will next perform as part of the "Stadium" tour on August 5th and 6th at Boston's Fenway Park.

Lars Ulrich Calls 'Master Of Puppets' Ressurgence 'Hard To Fully Comprehend'

Lars Ulrich is among the many that are amazed with the surprise Top 40 hit status of Metallica's 1986 track "Masters Of Puppets." The tune, which has taken on a new lease on life after being featured in the season four finale of Netflix's Stranger Things, is turning a whole new generation on to the thrash giants. Following the July 11th season finale, "Master Of Puppets" has racked up 17.5 million streams.

Bravewords reported Ulrich spoke to Chicago's Rock 95.5 and touched upon the song -- amazingly -- entering the Billboard single charts at Number 40 and shed light on how Metallica feels about letting their music find new audiences across the spectrum: "We try to be very involved in letting our music be part of these cultural things that are out there and just to connect to fans and get the music out there, but the way this thing has taken off. . . This song is 36-years-old, and it's now in the Top 40 in the UK. It's an eight-minute song! And it's f***ing making a statement."

Ulrich went on to talk about the importance of transcending the band's original audience with their music: "Obviously any opportunity you get to turn new kids or younger kids on to music that may be a gateway into discovering whatever it is, whether it's harder rock or different things, whatever is on their radar, is super cool. But this thing is just crazy. It's kind of hard to fully comprehend, but it's awesome."

When we caught up with Lars Ulrich a while ago, we asked him if it was safe to view him as the glue that holds Metallica together: "Sure. I mean, I can go with that. Obviously, it's a lot more complicated than that, and I find that as I grow older, my world exists less and less in black and whites and more and more in grays in between those, but I've always considered myself to be Metallica's number one fan, and with that comes responsibilities. To keep it going and keep it alive, and to make sure that Metallica is the best it can be at all times."

Metallica next performs on August 11th at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium. After that, the band's only other date on the books is on August 14th at Pittsburgh's PNC Park.

Def Leppard's 'Hysteria' Turns 35!!!

It was 35 years ago today (August 3rd, 1987) that Hysteria, Def Leppard released Hysteria -- its long-awaited followup to 1983's Pyromania. The album was the first to feature Rick Allen drumming after his 1984 car accident, which severed his left arm.

Hysteria also marks the last album to be released prior to the 1991 death of guitarist Steve Clarke from a lethal combination of alcohol and prescription drugs. Clark went on to write and perform on the posthumously released 1992 album, Adrenalize.

Hysteria, which finally hit Number One nearly a year after its release on July 23rd, 1988, spent six non-consecutive weeks on top of the Billboard 200, spawned six Top 20 hits -- including the chart-topping "Love Bites," "Animal" (#19), "Hysteria" (#10), "Pour Some Sugar On Me (#2), "Armageddon It" (#3), and "Rocket" (#12). To date, the album has sold over 35 million copies globally.

When pressed as to whether Hysteria collection feels like it was released over three decades ago, frontman Joe Elliott admitted: "Actually, it doesn't. Y'know, I've been talking to people about this recently and I think if you're, like, wrongfully imprisoned for 30 years -- it's a long time. We're not naive. We realize that, like, (The) Dark Side Of The Moon for Pink Floyd, or Sgt. Pepper's (Lonely Hearts Club Band) for the Beatles, most bands have got one album that they'll forever always gonna be talking about and is always the yardstick, or whatever, is judged against. And if you're lucky enough to make one album like that, you should be blessed and accept it. We don't think of it as an albatross, really."

FAST FORWARD

In 2018, Def Leppard released Hysteria: The Singles, a limited edition, 10-disc vinyl box set featuring all of the seven-inch singles from their 1987 multi-platinum album. The box included all eight vinyl singles for Hysteria -- including Def Leppard's Top Five hits -- "Pour Some Sugar On Me," "Animal," "Love Bites," "Hysteria," "Rocket" and "Armageddon It." The collection also includes two bonus singles, "Excitable"/"Run Riot" (Album Version) and "Love and Affection"/"Don't Shoot The Shotgun" (Album Version).

Hysteria: The Singles is housed in a box with a lift-off lid and features new cover art made up of all 10 of the single's sleeves, including the special Spanish "Animal" single, plus a booklet with a full band discography and an introduction written by frontman Joe Elliott.

2017 saw several deluxe 30th anniversary configurations of Hysteria -- a Super Deluxe Edition, Deluxe Version, One CD Vanilla Version, 2-LP Black Vinyl Version, and a limited edition 2-LP Colored Vinyl Version. The reissues included the album's assorted B-sides and live tracks -- plus the audio from the In The Round In Your Face (Live) concert film on CD for the first time.

Joe Walsh Taps Dave Grohl, The Black Keys, & Nine Inch Nails For Ohio-Based 'VetsAid 2022'

VetsAid 2022 will feature Joe Walsh reuniting with the James Gang -- bassist Dale Peters and drummer Jimmy Fox -- along with special guest Dave Grohl on November 13th at Columbus, Ohio's Nationwide Arena. Tickets for VetsAid 2022 go on sale to the public this Friday, August 5th.

Rolling Stone reported that for the 2022 benefit, Walsh enlisted an all-Ohio-based group of artists to play: Cleveland-based James Gang and Nine Inch Nails, the Breeders from Dayton, the Black Keys from Akron, and the Warren, Ohio-born Grohl. The show will mark both the James Gang's first gig in 15 years as well as its swan song.

Joe Walsh spoke about VetsAid 2022 in a statement:

It all started in Ohio. Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland, and then the world.

Now it is a great privilege and humbling opportunity for me to share the stage once again with my original James Gang buddies and with this absolutely incredible group of Ohio rock legends like Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, the Black Keys, the Breeders, and Dave Grohl.

I believe in Ohio and look forward to celebrating our musical legacy while honoring our veterans with VetsAid 2022.

Joe Walsh told us about the realities of being part of a Gold Star family: "I'm actually a Gold Star kid. My dad was actually killed in the Army Air Corps. I was born in '47, he was killed in '49, and so I kinda grew up without a dad. I eventually got a stepdad, who I love and who's always had my back. But, my first six years of being alive I was dad-less. I always wondered what he was like and I alw. . . Y'know, I didn't have anybody to play catch with or any kind of father figure until my stepfather came along."

We asked Walsh, what is the quickest way to help veterans and their families on a local, grassroots level: "Well, you can find out more about this at VetsAid.org. There's also a network of places, but I would say, anybody listening to this, there are vet organizations all around us. They're small, and they're predominately vet run, but ask around and find something near you, because that's who needs help. Because you can save lives and even if it helps them prevent suicide, you can make a huge difference."

Neil Sanderson Says Zakk Wylde Was The 'Obvious Choice' For Pantera Reunion Tour

Three Days Grace drummer Neil Sanderson says Zakk Wylde was the "obvious choice" to play guitar for the Pantera reunion tour after bass player Rex Brown had previously said that Wylde wouldn't be touring with the band. Pantera's surviving members Philip Anselmo, Rex Brown will unite with Wylde and drummer Charlie Benante for a world tour in North America and Europe. Sanderson said during a radio interview, "Even within my camp, there are some massive PANTERA fans. I think Zakk Wylde was the obvious choice for the job. And it will be what it is.

He continued, "I saw PANTERA back when they opened for BLACK… It was actually one of the coolest shows I've ever been to — it was BLACK SABBATH, PANTERA and the DEFTONES in Toronto. That's the last time I saw PANTERA. It was pretty awesome."

He added, "So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see, man. It'll be very interesting to see how it all plays out."

Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard Shed Light On Grunge Overtaking Metal

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard spoke frankly about the accession of grunge music in the early-'90s and how it affected hard rock and heavy metal.

Essentially, Gossard believes it was an organic changing of musical tides, telling, Vwmusicrocks.com, "I think there's always renewal in the world, and with that renewal, comes new perspectives. And I think that hard rock was really stagnating at that point in a way that gave an opportunity to what I'll call 'less musically talented' musicians to say, 'Hey, there's another way to play rock songs. There's another way to have songs that are heavy. And there's another way to create chaos and energy from those songs that would be outside the normal color palette of a heavy metal song.'"

He went on to talk about his key influences upon learning to play: "Coming up, I listened to a lot of heavy metal. I listened to a lot of Motörhead. I listened to a lot of Iron Maiden. I listened to a lot of Merciful Fate. I listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin. I listened to all those new wave of British heavy metal bands, and I was into it. This said, as a kid, I didn't really know how to play like that, so I was just doing what sounded right to me. And I think that in the late-'80s, there was a very free attitude about art and music that was brewing in the wake of hard rock, and a lot of people were experimenting with sounds, and the bands formed from there."

Gossard touched upon what was so enticing to rock fans about grunge: "There was something about it that was fresh, that really captured people's ears, and that had a huge effect on it all too. But you know, a lot of those heavy metal bands you're talking about are still around, so clearly they all didn't die. Sure, a lot of them had to regroup, and yes, some did die, but that's part of the life cycle, right? There are still a lot of fans out there who love hard rock, and I'm one of them. I love hard rock, and I always have, but renewal and rebirth are a part of art, I think."

Pearl Jam has always been comfortable looking back, mainly because they never stopped moving forward and breaking new ground. Bassist Jeff Ament told us how that the band's early success offered them opportunities they never could've dreamed of: "There were a lot of benefits that came out of getting as big as we did early on. We were stoked to play in front of a couple of hundred people at the local bar, y'know, and so to go from that to a couple of years later, Rolling Stones are asking us to open for them and Neil Young's asking us to be his band and all that kind of stuff. . . it was a trip."

Rob Zombie Brings Peter Criss On Stage To Sing 'Happy Birthday'

Rob Zombie surprised his guitar player and his audience when he introduced the legendary, Peter Criss to the stage. Zombie stopped the set to announce that his guitar player, John 5 was celebrating a birthday and then brought out the KISS drummer as a birthday present.

Zombie said, "As you know, J5 is a really big KISS fan, so I thought to myself, ‘What can I get John 5 for his birthday that he doesn't already have?' I went out and got him an original Peter Criss… You don't have this at home, J5, I don't think."

Peter Criss gave a big hug to J5 and then took the mic and led the crowd in the traditional song.

Rob Zombie is currently out on a co-headlining tour with Mudvayne.

Green Day Played These Songs Live For The First Time In Two Decades

Green Day pulled out some old favorites during a warmup gig prior to this weekend's headlining Lollapalooza set.

While performing at the Metro in Chicago, Illinois on Friday (July 29th), the band played "Church on Sunday" and "Warning," two tracks that they haven't played live in 21 years.

According to Stereogum, they disregarded much of their planned setlist in order to play several other tracks that are rarely heard live including, "Too Dumb to Die," Whatshername," "One of My Lies," and "Christine Road."

Metallica Jams With 'Stranger Things' Star Backstage

Proof that Metallica remains ageless, the band met up with and jammed with Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn last week. As Blabbermouth reported, "Quinn, the actor known for his role as "Eddie Munson" performed Metallica's 1986 song 'Master Of Puppets' in one of the most memorable moments in the show's season four finale."

Prior to the band's July 28th Lollapalooza appearance at Chicago's Grant Park, the band thanked Quinn for helping breath new life into the '80s classic. The band jammed with him and gifted him a custom and signed B.C. Rich guitar, very similar to the one he used during his TV appearance.

Afterward the meet up, Quinn told the Netflix-owned fan site Tudum: "It was amazing! Opportunities to play 'Master Of Puppets' with the most iconic metal band of all time don't come around very often. A story for the grandkids."

Many fans consider Master Of Puppets Metallica's masterpiece, which the band itself acknowledged when it played the record in its entirety on a summer 2006 tour of Europe.

Frontman James Hetfield told us that playing the album live came down to the fans: "It was more of a fan's asking for that than us wanting to do it. Y'know, that was a pretty important album in our career, so pretty historic for a lot of people and that made sense."

Metallica next performs on August 11th at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium. After that, the band's only other date on the books is on August 14th at Pittsburgh's PNC Park.

Flashback: MTV Premieres

The MTV cable network launched 41 years ago this today, at 12:01 a.m. ET on August 1st, 1981. During its first five months of being on air, MTV was available in only 2.1 million homes in the U.S. -- with New York City one of the major spots that did not receive the signal.

The lack of MTV being carried across the country by various cable providers resulted in one of the '80s most legendary marketing campaigns with top artists of the day appearing on MTV commercials, demanding fans to contact their cable outlets with the soon-to-be iconic catchphrase: "I WANT MY MTV!!!"

When MTV first signed on it billed itself as a music network devoted to following "rock n' roll" from coast to coast. Today, critics blast the network for not showing any music on its airwaves, with the network now primarily comprised of original reality-based, "non-scripted" programming.

In 2012, the surviving original MTV VJ's, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Nina Blackwood, published their joint memoir-- VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV's First Wave. The fifth of the original VJ's, J.J. Jackson, passed away in 2004.

The first 15 music videos aired on MTV were:

  1. The Buggles: "Video Killed The Radio Star"
  2. Pat Benatar: "You Better Run"
  3. Rod Stewart: "She Won't Dance"
  4. The Who: "You Better You Bet"
  5. PhD: "Little Suzi's On The Up"
  6. Cliff Richard: "We Don't Talk Anymore"
  7. The Pretenders: "Brass In Pocket"
  8. Todd Rundgren: "Time Heals"
  9. REO Speedwagon: "Take It On The Run"
  10. Styx: "Rockin' The Paradise"
  11. Robin Lane and the Chartbusters: "When Things Go Wrong"
  12. Split Enz: "History Never Repeats"
  13. .38 Special: "Hold On Loosely"
  14. April Wine: "Just Between You And Me"
  15. Rod Stewart: "Sailing"

MTV debuted with its iconic footage of a spaceship's launch: (Mission control) "T- minus ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, we've gone for main engine start, we have main engine start." (Narrator) "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll." (music: MTV theme)

During its first hours on hair, original VJ Mark Goodman shared MTV's mission statement with viewers: "Not only am I real excited that my very favorite sneakers could be here with me tonight, but we are all very excited here at MTV to be bringing you the best music all day, every day. But we're also gonna cover the music world from coast-to-coast, and we do mean that, all 50 states. Every day we're gonna have special reports for you from across the nation on almost any subject that relates to music."

VJ Nina Blackwood recalled to us how she first came to hear about MTV: "I was working with people out in Los Angeles that also had the vision that video music was going to be something to be reckoned with in the future. So, I was already kind of doing that in the experimental fashion and then I came across in Billboard magazine an article about MTV looking, y'know, for on-air talent. It was just a hand-in-glove fit, basically."

Lamb of God's Randy Blythe said, "I think a lot of the messes human beings find ourselves in could be very easily prevented simply by paying attention to obvious repeating patterns, both in our personal lives and in a broader sociohistorical context. What some call ‘omens' are really just manifestations of the fact that there is nothing new under the sun. It's foolish to ignore this, but we all do it."

The song "Omens" follows the album's first single, "Nevermore," which collected more than 1 million views on YouTube and over 1 million streams on Spotify shortly after its release just last month.

David Lee Roth Drops New Track Saluting Van Halen's Early Days

David Lee Roth has blown more than a few longtime fans' minds with the unannounced drop of his tribute to Van Halen, called "Nothing Could Have Stopped Us Back Then Anyway." The acoustic-based track popped up on his official YouTube site sporting a photo of the band circa 1979 jumping while on tour.

The track finds a clearly nostalgic Roth sifting through memories and touching on the band's early days and their unprecedented ride at the turn of the 1970's. "Nothing Could Have Stopped Us Then Anyway" stems from 2007 sessions with guitarist John 5 and Roth's original solo band drummer Gregg Bissonette for a project that never materialized.

"Nothing Could Have Stopped Us Back Then Anyway" - lyrics via Blabbermouth:

We laughed, we cried, we threw the television off that balcony
That memory means so much to me

No doubt in me, I do believe that no one listens to both sides except the neighbors
Fine art of compromise, happy losing half of mine 'cuz she'll lose her half later

First taste of being victim of the very songs I sing
Ended up with "say goodbye" and "I hope I hear good things"

Walk away
Walk away

Nothing could have stopped us back then anyway

Remember when you safety pinned the tablecloth to my pants
And I stood up to the sound of dancing and the sound of our romance beginning
Kicked out the restaurant to make the night complete
Six pack and a happy meal on a park bench down the street

Dinner with Tennessee's elite

"Once upon a time" is how a fairy tale sells it
"Sit down you won't believe this s***" is how the trucker tells it
Strike up the band, hire the piper we will pay

Nothing could have stopped us back then anyway

David Lee Roth told us that these days bands just don't make their bones playing out the way the pre-fame Van Halen did in the first half of the 1970's: "Used to be, you would play in clubs five, six, seven 45-minute sets a night. The mighty classic Van Halen, when I was quarterback, must have learned 400 songs by other people, ranging from KC & The Sunshine Band, doing four-part harmony on 'Get Down Tonight.' We played Led Zeppelin, and we played Ohio Players, and we played ZZ Top. Somewhere in between, you had a balancing act there."

Author Greg Renoff received raves for his Van Halen biography, Van Halen Rising: How A Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal. In the book Renoff explained that what David Lee Roth lacked in vocal prowess was covered by his passion and total dedication to delivering onstage: "One of the people I talked to was the bass player in Red Ball Jet -- that was the band Dave formed after the Van Halen brothers turned him down the first time. He said from the first time he saw Dave -- so this is even before Red Ball Jet -- he said he saw him play in a park, on the same bill. These are like high school kids, everybody else is kinda swaying to the music while they play -- y'know, Dave goes out there, he's got, like the Mick Jagger rooster tail going out of the back of his jeans and he's, like, y'know, grinding and doing these things and everybody's, like 'We were just having lunch with you in the cafeteria six hours ago -- what are you doing, man?!' Like, y'know? But that was who he was. He was entrainment first all the time from the get-go. No. It's about the show. It's about being an entertainer."

Shinedown's Brent Smith Breaks Up Fight During Toronto Concert

Shinedown's Brent Smith jumped into crowd at Toronto concert to break up a fight. According to MusicLifeMagazine.net, Smith told the aggressor to back down.

He then told the victim that he would have them and their guest joing the side stage to see the rest of the show.

Joan Jett: Female Rockers Face A 'No-Win' Situation

Joan Jett has heard all the criticisms of being a female rocker. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is out on the road this summer with heavyweights Motley Crue, Def Leppard, and Poison. Despite all the success and accolades she's earned as a co-founder of the Runaways and leading the Blackhearts ever since, she says that being a female in a male dominated industry is never overlooked. She explained to Mojo, "For women, it's a no-win. You're either too young or too old. You've got to make your own rules and follow them and just hope other people recognize and go, 'Yeah, I agree with her.'"

Recalling the mid-'70s ascent to fame with the Runaways she said, "I was disappointed to a degree that the audience was full of guys leering -- but I also understood why. I guess that had to be kind of scary for girls to go in there and watch to a degree -- I wasn't in the audience but I can only imagine the guys had quite an. . . energy about them."

Regarding the gender issues female rockers deal with even today, Jett explained, "People get really weird about stuff. A girl should be able to go out and play rock n' roll in this environment as well; are you saying that I shouldn't be able to do the show? Because what -- these guys sing about girls? And that's a problem? Come on. Give me a break. It's a little pearl-clutchy for me. You're talking about rock n' roll. Rock ' roll."

Joan Jett feels that after all this time, there's too much novelty placed on the fact that female rockers are somehow "unusual" -- or bucking the system: "I don't find that there's any difference whether or not you're female or male -- that has nothing to do with whether or not you can play music! I mean, girls play cellos and violins in symphony orchestras -- so why can't a girl play a guitar? We try to put out the best values for kids to pick up on; hard work, y'know, determination, do what you believe in doing, don't let people push you around. Y'know, things like that."

Bush Announce Fall Album Release, New Single

Bush will release their new album called The Art of Survival on October 7th. They have also released a new single called "More Than Machines."

Frontman Gavin Rossdale said, "Instead of being mournful or self-piteous, this is about the success stories of humanity's survival against the odds. People just find a way to push through. We've all obviously suffered in varying degrees. I think the nature of life is the art of survival. Everyone is being tested all of the time, but we find a way."

He added, "In recent memory, we've made major strides and shown great resilience in the face of war, endless instances of racism, gender politics, a pandemic, and a melting pot of what we've experienced. For me, The Art of Survival encompasses all of this."

Bush will join Alice in Chains and Breaking Benjamin on their co-headlining tour beginning on August 10th in Burgettstown, PA.
