Sammy Hagar Feels A Responsibility To Play Van Halen Music

Sammy Hagar admits that with the passing of Eddie Van Halen, he feels the pull from fans to perform Van Halen material. Hagar, who's currently on the road with the Circle -- which features Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony -- told Southgate, Michigan's News-Herald that the "Van Hagar" catalogue is still very much in demand: "I'm shocked that no matter what Van Halen song we play, no matter how deep the cut, (fans) are (reacting) like it's a Number One single. We can do, like, 'Amsterdam' (from 1995's Balance album) and they're singing along like it was on the radio all the time."

He went on to say, "When people love that music that much and we're the guys who did it and we're still around, then, yeah, we have that responsibility to play it for them."

Regarding a possible Van Halen tribute concert or tour, Hagar admitted he was still on the fence, but explained, "I'm so happy with everything I'm doing now, I don't think I'd go back there. Maybe if Alex (Van Halen) was interested, it might be something to talk about, with him and Mikey and a superstar guitar player. But it's really not Van Halen without Eddie, so. . . I just don't know."

Sammy Hagar & The Circle with George Thorogood & The Destroyers perform tonight (August 24) at Cincinnati's Riverbend Music Center.

The Circle's new album, Crazy Times, drops on September 30th.

Kirk Hammett Says Metallica 'Is Not Getting Any Quicker' In The Studio

Kirk Hammett spoke about the struggles Metallica has in the studio and the amount of time it takes to finish an album.

The band's lead guitarist joked to Goldmine, "Yeah, y'know, it's not getting any quicker, too. It's just like, we have a way of working. We have a process that unfortunately takes a long time. It's just the way we work, the way it is, the way it works as a band. And I've grown to accept that."

He credited his recent solo album for alleviating the stress in formulating ideas for new Metallica material: "Putting out Portals is great for me because it kind of frees me up from that schedule. I can come up with a few tracks, record them and put them out, and I can do it on a completely different time schedule from the band. And that's great because it doesn't seem to get in the way of the band's schedule because, like I say, we move at our own pace."

R.E.M. Releases 40th Anniversary Edition Of 'Chronic Town'

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, R.E.M. has reissued their debut 1982 EP, Chronic Town. The set is now available for the first time ever as a standalone CD -- as well as an exclusive LP picture disc, and cassette. The new package features extensive liner notes by producer Mitch Easter.

Chronic Town released on August 24, 1982 via I.R.S. Records, with the five-song set including such instant classics as "Gardening At Night," "Wolves, Lower," and "1,000,000." The EP, which followed the band's debut single, July 1981's "Radio Free Europe," was recorded in October 1981 at Winston-Salem, North Carolina's Drive-In Studio and sold 20,000 copies in its first year of release.

Chronic Town finally saw wide release when it was included on the CD edition of R.E.M.'s 1987 fan favorite rarities compilation, Dead Letter Office.

Frontman Michael Stipe looked back on his and the band's career and how college radio played a big part in their success: "When we were coming along, college radio was becoming kind of a very important force in American music, and people that were not interested in Top 40 or super-popular stuff, they had somewhere to go where you could hear new things and you could hear things that might be extremely local and not necessarily in your region of the country, but were exciting. And what that created was kind of a network of bands like ourselves and Sonic Youth and Black Flag who had for the first time a very fledgling core audience that when you went and performed in a club they would come and see you, they knew who you were, they knew the one or two singles that you had."

Anthrax, Black Label Society Cancel Shows Due To 'Broken Stage'

Anthrax and Black Label Society's shows at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, NY on Friday (August 19th) were canceled after it was determined that the stage was broken and "unsafe for the bands to perform," according to social media posts by both bands. Tickets for that show will be refunded beginning on Tuesday (August 23rd).

Anthrax and Black Label Society's posts read in part, "Anthrax and Black Label Society do not cancel shows lightly but we could not put the health and safety of the bands and crew at risk. All of the bands tonight apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment. We will be back to Rochester to rock another time."

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian also tweeted, "Rochester we didn't want to cancel, we had to. The stage was broken, the venue did not fix it and it was not safe to continue the show. It's sh**ty for you, it's sh**ty for us. We'll be back my friends, on a real stage."

Robert Plant Still Not Open For Led Zeppelin Reunion

Robert Plant is still not open for a Led Zeppelin reunion. Although currently on tour with Alison Krauss and enjoying the success of their recent hit collaboration, Raise The Roof, Zeppelin fans still clamor for just one more reunion. Plant spoke to The Los Angeles Times and was asked about a return to Zeppelin, to which he explained, "Going back to the font to get some kind of massive applause -- it doesn't really satisfy my need to be stimulated."

Despite the December 2007 one-off Zeppelin reunion in London featuring himself, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham filling in for his late dad John Bonham, Plant has been the lone hold-out in committing to a full-on reunion. Several of the industries' top promoters have essentially offered the band a blank check should they commit to any number of road dates.

He went on to say "I know there are people from my generation who don't want to stay home and so they go out and play. If they're enjoying it and doing what they need to do to pass the days, then that's their business, really."

Regarding his legendary vocal prowess and how it's aged, Plant revealed, "I know that the full, open-throated falsetto that I was able to concoct in 1968 carried me through until I was tired of it. Then that sort of exaggerated personality of vocal performance morphed and went somewhere else. But as a matter of fact, I was playing in Reykjavík, in Iceland, about three years ago, just before Covid. It was Midsummer Night and there was a festival, and I got my band and I said, 'OK, let's do 'Immigrant Song.'' They'd never done it before. We just hit it, and bang -- there it was. I thought, 'Oh, I didn't think I could still do that.'"

Robert Plant admitted that no matter what he does, there will always be a cross-section of fans that rate it against his work with Led Zeppelin: "The Led Zeppelin myth has been extended now by the mission and the cult. And so, everybody goes, 'Oh, but Zeppelin was much better than that.' Maybe it'll happen to me, too, but I've kind of taken the essence of Zeppelin, and I am the singer of Led Zeppelin. And I've taken the essence of the changes of Led Zeppelin and brought it up to date. So, I could never, ever hope to top it. I could never expect to be taken as. . . taken to the hearts of people quite like Led Zeppelin was, because I'm only a part of it."

Billie Eilish And Finneas Find They Have Big Fans In BTS

RM and J-Hope were among the 25,000 audience members. Fans caught them on video dancing through-out the show and jumping up and down and throwing their hands in the air to the music.

One video captures them moshing to Eilish's 2018 hit "You Should See Me In a Crown," and another shows them bopping along to an album cut from Happier Than Ever.

After the show, RM and J-Hope ended up backstage and later posted photos and videos from the night.

Jane's Addiction Reunites With Original Bass Player Eric Avery

After more than a decade apart, Jane's Addiction's founding bass player, Eric Avery, seems to have reunited with the band. There are pictures and video of Avery playing with Perry Farrell on both Eric's and Jane's Addiction's social media accounts. The caption on Avery's post is simply, "It's on!"

The band, apparently along with Avery, will kick off their 32-date Spirits on Fire Tour with Smashing Pumpkins on October 2nd in Dallas.

Avery and Farrell created Jane's Addiction in 1985 but went separate way in the early 90s. For the past 20 years, Chris Chaney has largely been the band's bass player.

Official Ronnie James Dio Doc Hitting Theaters Next Month

The official Ronnie James Dio documentary -- Dio: Dreamers Never Die -- will run in cinemas globally for two days on September 28th and October 2nd. According to the film's announcement, executive produced by Dio's widow and longtime manager, Wendy Dio, and fully authorized by the artist's estate, "Dio: Dreamers Never Die delves deep into the singer's incredible rise from a '50s doo-wop crooner to his early rock days in Elf and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, to replacing Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, and finally cementing his rock star status with his own band, DIO."

Along with never-before-seen footage and a clutch of personal photos, among the Dio insiders interviewed in the doc are Wendy Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes, Vinny Appice, Lita Ford, Rob Halford, Sebastian Bach, Eddie Trunk, and Jack Black.

In addition to the feature-length film, this special cinema event will also include "a hand-picked selection of outtakes from the cutting room floor, creating an experience that is exclusive only to fans in attendance." For ticket info, log on to: https://www.diodreamersneverdie.com/

Tony Iommi told us that Sabbath's legion of fans embraced the great Ronnie James Dio and the group's turn-of-the-decade rebirth: "The fans stuck with us -- I mean, obviously, you're going to get some that didn't agree with it. When we first went out with Ronnie, we believed in what we did and we loved what we were doing, and so, we weren't trying to cover anything up. We just went out and done it (sic), and we got the odd one or two, who'd shout 'Ozzy,' and stuff -- but that soon went off once they got used to Ronnie and accepted him into the band. I mean it is so difficult to change a lead singer in a band. And a lot of bands have really fallen by the wayside by trying to do things like that. But we really believed in what we were doing -- and loved what we were doing and (it was) just nice to see the crowd with us, really."

Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer on May 16th, 2010 at the age of 67.

Ozzy Osbourne says Jimmy Page Blew Of Request To Play On New Album

Ozzy Osbourne revealed that Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page blew off a request to appear on his upcoming album, Patient Number 9. Osbourne was successful in getting the two other Yardbirds guitar legends -- Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck -- to appear on the set.

During a chat with Metal Hammer, Ozzy spoke about not being able to snag Page for a contribution: "I don't even know if he plays any more, but I thought getting Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page meant having the greatest guitarists on the planet. But I never heard from him. Maybe he'd lost his phone or something!"

Ozzy Osbourne understands all too well the pros and cons of dealing with unabashed idolization. He told us he loves meeting his fans -- but admitted he's never been comfortable with accolades: "I'm not very good at receiving good things said about me, y'know? When I was with Black Sabbath in the '70s, we never used to like having good reviews and they never, ever gave us a good review. And we thought maybe it was because they're not giving us good reviews that the kids are going, 'Up yours, we think they're okay,' y'know? I suppose you could say we were the punks of our time, y'know? It's more respectable that way, I think."

Ozzy Osbourne's Patient Number 9 drops on September 9th.

Happy Birthday, Robert Plant!!!

Happy Birthday to Robert Plant, who turns 74 on Saturday (August 20th)!!! Although Plant has enjoyed a successful solo career since 1982, he will always be best known for his years fronting Led Zeppelin and co-writing the majority of the band's songs with Jimmy Page.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are currently on the road in support of their second joint album, Raise The Roof. The set was released last November 19th and topped Billboard's Independent Albums chart, hit Number Three on the magazine's Top Country Albums list, and reached Number Seven on the Billboard 200.|

In October and November, Plant and latest solo band, Saving Grace, are set to play nine dates across Ireland and Scotland. In addition to Plant, Saving Grace features vocalist Suzy Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, along with guitarists Tony Kelsey and Matt Worley.

In October 2018, Plant released his latest solo set, Carry Fire, which peaked at Number 14 on the Billboard 200.

Released in 2020 was Digging Deep, Plant's double-disc solo compilation. The 30-track collection ties in with his critically acclaimed podcast of the same name, and includes three previously unreleased songs. The set features such Plant favorites as "Big Log," "Heaven Knows," "In The Mood," "Ship Of Fools," "Hurting Kind," and "Angel Dance," among others.

Among the guest appearances on the various tracks, which span Plant's now-38-year solo career, are Jimmy Page, Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, Phil Collins, Nigel Kennedy, Richard Thompson, and his side band Strange Sensation/ the Sensational Space Shifters.

In June 2019, Plant premiered his new podcast, titled Digging Deep. The promo for the new 'cast featured Plant setting the scene for the show, explaining, "Making records is a very personal experience. I was so deep to get away from that environment, then I was saying, 'let's get out of here!' But then, now and again, down the line, opening up some of the songs and looking back at 'em, I marvel at some of it. The players in the room were out of sight -- and they found me to be something that they hadn't been used to dealing with."

Out now on DVD and digital video is Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters Live At David Lynch's Festival Of Disruption. The eight-song performance was captured on October 8th, 2016 at L.A.'s Ace Hotel Theatre as part of David Lynch's inaugural Festival of Disruption, which raised money for The David Lynch Foundation. In addition to newer solo material, Plant dips into Zeppelin's back catalogue for updated takes on such classics as "Black Dog," "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You," "Going To California," and a medley of "Hoochie Coochie Man / Whole Lotta Love / Mona."

According to reports, Led Zeppelin reportedly turned down $14 million for two reunion performances at 2016's "Desert Trip" concerts in Indio, California. Showbiz411.com -- the site that broke the news on the concerts -- spoke to an insider that revealed that not only were all the headliners each receiving $14 million flat for their pair of weekend sets, but that Zeppelin was approached to reunite and once again, Jimmy Page said yes and Plant chose to pass. The source claimed, "Jimmy went crazy. He really wanted to do it." Also, although all the acts -- including the Who, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, and Neil Young -- signed on as favored nations regarding their fee, sources suggest that both McCartney and the Stones snagged more for their respective sets.

Robert Plant has three children with his ex-wife Maureen Wilson -- a daughter, Carmen Jane, who went on to marry Plant's longtime bass player Charlie Jones, and son Logan Romero. The couple's second child, Karac Pendragon, died at age five in 1977 from a stomach virus. Following Plant's divorce in 1983, Plant took up with his wife's sister, Shirley and fathered his youngest child, Jesse Lee.

Led Zeppelin's 1979 classic, "All Of My Love," was written by Robert Plant and John Paul Jones about the July 26th, 1977 death of Karac. Plant shed light on the massive blow the loss of his child had on his life: "Y'know, our fate, at, at times is so fragile, that when I lost my boy, I was 28 years old, and I was the King. I had two kids and everything was amazing. I had no ideas of dealing with tragedy, or anything in life, which wasn't just moving on. So when something as big -- there is nothing bigger, really, I don't think, than losing your child, and when that happens, you have to revue everything about yourself, about your condition, and about the future of your family. And that was. . . it was so, sobering that I've never, ever -- obviously -- been the same ever again from that day on."

Robert Plant said that Phil Collins provided the support necessary upon diving full scale into a solo career following Led Zeppelin's 1980 split: "I made my business to go out and start again at the age of 32 -- it's like, hysterical, really, when you think about it now. But I worked and worked with these guys -- Robbie Blunt, who was a particularly fine guitarist. And I was graced by my first two solo records Pictures At Eleven and (The) Principle Of Moments. A drummer contacted me and said, ‘I love (John) Bonham so much I wanna sit behind you when you sing. It was Phil Collins. His career was just kicking in and he was the most spirited and positive and really encouraging force, because you can't imagine what it was like, me trying to carve my own way after all that."

Prior to the release of his second album, 1983's The Principle Of Moments, which featured such '80s standards as "In The Mood" and "Big Log," Robert Plant spoke about the importance of moving out from under Led Zeppelin's massive shadow: "This next album is crucial. I mean, it's really weird for a bloke of my age to say that anything's crucial, I suppose when I've done so much -- but that's the whole thing about me. Then next step is very important, having been with Zeppelin for years and years. The first album that I've done away from that stable was pretty good. And the next one's got to. . . I've got to take everything that I know and everything that these guys I'm playing with know and shift across to gain a wider platform of what I can do, y'know, what we can all do together. And once we've achieve that, by March, April next year it should be able to go on the road."

Back in 2014, while publicizing the expanded reissues of the Zeppelin catalogue, Plant spoke to the NME and addressed Jimmy Page's claims of him being uninterested in teaming up, saying, "I feel for the guy. He knows he's got the headlines if he wants them. But I don't know what he's trying to do. So I feel slightly disappointed and baffled."

Plant revealed that he proposed working again with Page -- and presumably Zeppelin -- in an acoustic capacity: "A couple of years ago, I said, 'If you've got anything acoustic, let me know. I'll give it a whirl.' It was hands across the water. He just walked away. But we couldn't do anything proper. The weight of expectation is too great."

In 2012, Plant rush released a surprise live album from the Space Shifters, only two weeks after recording the set in London. The 15-track-collection, called Robert Plant Presents Sensational Space Shifters 7/12/12 HMV Forum, London, GB, includes tracks from Plant and bandmember Patty Griffin's solo works, blues covers of Howlin' Wolf and John Mayall tunes, along with handful of Led Zeppelin classics. In addition to Patty Griffin, the Space Shifters features members of Plant's pre-Band Of Joy group, Strange Sensations, including frequent Plant collaborator Justin Adams.

Despite the December 2007 Zeppelin reunion in London featuring himself, Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham filling in for his late dad John Bonham, Plant has been the lone hold-out in committing to a full-on reunion. Several of the industries' top promoters have essentially offered the band a blank check should they commit to any number of road dates.

In October 2012 at the New York City press conference following the press preview of Zeppelin's concert film, Celebration Day -- which, along with its accompanying CD, chronicles the 2007 reunion gig -- Plant played it coy and then downright rude to reporters clamoring for some type of statement about future Zeppelin plans. After some coaxing by the event's moderator, Plant finally answered the reunion question with a bit of respect for the reporters in the room: "We were so happy that we were actually gettin' it right (coughs) and taking it beyond what we thought we were about that night. There were moments in it where we just took off and pushed off in some place. The responsibility of doing that four nights a week for the rest of time is a different thing. 'Cause, we're pretty good at what we do; the tail should never wag the dog. If we're capable of doing something in our own time that will be what will happen. So any inane questions who are from syndicated outlets (laughter), you should just really think what it takes to answer a question like that in one second, y'know? We know what we've got."

Plant explained that Led Zeppelin constantly stayed ahead of the curve by never resting on their creative laurels: "You have to be creative and imaginative and move on. And I think the great essence of Led Zeppelin is the creativity and the imagination that developed with each project. And a project is a project. It's not just going back and visiting the past. It's moving forward."

Coincidentally, just as the Zeppelin reunion rumors first began to catch fire in 2007, Plant enjoyed the biggest success of his solo career with his collaboration with Alison Krauss on their joint album Raising Sand, which hit Number Two on The Billboard 200 album charts. Plant and Krauss' cover of the Everly Brothers' "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" scored the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Raising Sand producer T-Bone Burnett was sure that the duo would click immediately: "I know Alison's adventurous, and I didn't know Robert until we started working together. But, I've certainly followed him and I knew that he was adventurous, and I knew they were both interested in the history of music. So I suspected we could find common ground pretty easily."

In 2009, Plant was appointed a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) on the Queen's New Years Honors list, marking the first time that any member of Led Zeppelin has received an official accolade from Queen Elizabeth. The Queen's Honors are handed out twice a year, in June and at the New Year, and are awarded to people for all types of service, including the performing arts.

Although Robert Plant has had several distinct chapters in his legendary career, he's adamant that all of them -- from being a belting rock screamer in Led Zeppelin, to edgy pop songsmith of the ‘80s, and now the Americana/world music-influenced musician, are all equally authentic: "I was always 100 percent me, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it -- I wouldn't have done it. There weren't many tracks that Zeppelin didn't use; they were all pretty. . . there was a lot of incendiary material there. I play the game -- but I don't play the game. If I didn't play the game, I wouldn't be here -- but I like the game."

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss perform on Saturday (August 20th) in Stateline, Nevada at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey's.

Coldplay Releases Live Performance Video For 'Humankind'

Coldplay have released the video for the song "Humankind" from their chart-topping Music Of The Spheres album. The clip is a live performance video based on footage from the band's four sold-out shows at Mexico City's Foro Sol stadium earlier this year.

Coldplay played the fourth of six sold out shows at London's Wembley Stadium last night (Wednesday, August 17th). The tour takes the band to Glasgow on August 23rd before they head back to Latin America for a run of dates which culminates in 10 sold-out nights at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Machine Gun Kelly And Megan Fox Together Despite Breakup Stories

TMZ reports that despite earlier stories, Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox are still together. They were spotted in public having lunch in Brentwood, California on Tuesday (8-16).

Sources close to the couple say they're doing just fine -- no big issues. They obviously can't be together 24/7 because both of them work and have kids, but they're solid.

Suspicions began when Megan started posting pics online without MGK. And their last upload together was way back in June. She also didn't show up to his hometown show in Cleveland over the weekend, and that fueled the breakup rumors.

At the concert, MGK told the audience that he just talked to Megan before he got on stage, calling her his wife.

And in what seems to becoming a habit of his, earlier in the show, he got so amped up that he smashed a wine glass on his face, creating a bloody mess.

TL;DR:

  • TMZ reports that despite earlier stories, Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox are still together.
  • They were spotted in public having lunch in Brentwood, California on Tuesday (8-16).
  • Suspicions began when Megan started posting pics online without MGK. And their last upload together was way back in June.

Motley Crue Fan Injured After Falling From Upper Balcony

A Motley Crue fan fan fell from the upper balcony at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis during the band's concert there on Tuesday (August 16th) night. According to reports, Motley Crue was about 45 minutes into their set and in the middle of performing "Looks That Kill" when the incident happened. Local police said officers assisted the injured person was "awake and breathing" at the time, but there's no update on his condition.

TMZ released a video that shows a group of people standing around the unidentified man, who, according to witnesses, was surrounded by a puddle of blood.

Motley Crue seemed unaware of the incident and continued performing until the end of their set. So far, the band has not issued a statement.

I Prevail Opens Up About Working On Their New Album True Power

Detroit heavy rock troupe I Prevail re-emerges on Friday, Aug. 19, with its third album, True Power. The quintet recorded the 15-song set during the past couple of years with producer Tyler Smith, recording at Smith's studio in Los Angeles and guitarist Steve Menolan's home studio in the Detroit suburbs. True Power is the follow-up to 2019's Trauma, which launched the singles "Hurricane," "Breaking Down" and "Every Time You Leave" and scored Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance. Brian Burkheiser, I Prevail's "clean" vocalist, tells us that the success gave the band more confidence heading into the True Power sessions: "We've grown and kind of gone from this band that just had a Taylor Swift cover and a little EP to now we're Grammy nominated and selling out crazy tours and playing all over the world... I feel like it's something all of us have really gained so much confidence and... It really did feel like, 'Hey, we kind of already have supplanted ourselves. . . " (20 OC: . . .supplanted ourselves)

He continued, "We got the Grammy nomination, which brought a lot of confidence. We've had tours now where we're selling out stuff in Europe, we're selling out stuff in Australia, we're selling out stuff, obviously, in the States."

Burkheiser said I Prevail was touring in Europe during March of 2020 when things began to lock down because of the Covid-19 pandemic. A tour with Papa Roach and Five Finger Death Punch was canceled, and I Prevail had a tough decision to make about what to do next: "Essentially it just kind of put us into a mode where we had to make some decision, like, 'Hey, do we cross our fingers and hope we can still tour on the Trauma cycle or do we kind of just say, 'Hey, this is probably gonna be a couple of years of going through this pandemic, and do we just get in the studio and start going crazy?' So we basically made the call to go into the studio and just see what would happen."

True Power was preceded by the singles "Body Bag" and "Bad Things," the latter of which reached No. 15 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart.

I Prevail begins its North American tour on Sept. 9 in Asbury Park.N.J., wrapping up in Detroit just before Thanksgiving. Pierce the Veil and Fit For a King will be on the bill for both legs, while Yours Truly will open through Oct. 9 and Stand Atlantic stands in starting Oct. 22. Burkheiser says that: "I'm just really excited to play these new songs and be able to play some olds songs from Trauma and Lifelines, too, that fans are excited to hear..."I can't imagine how crazy all these spots will be, and especially with this new record leaning into kind of the heavier side, I've got to imagine right when we come out the gate with the first song I'm gonna look out and all these crowds will be going crazy, which I know is gonna bring so much energy and so much life to me."
