Nickelback Opens Up About Touring With Brantley Gilbert

Nickelback has opened up about why they decided to go on tour with country superstar Brantley Gilbert. Chad Kroeger told us, "There was a lot of bribery involved (laughs). To us, in our camp, we kept getting the same handful of artists and you can go back to the same well and give the same exact show that you've been doing for the last 20 years. We wanted to try something a little different. We wanted to dip our toe in a slightly different pond and give the fans an entirely different show."

Chad continued, "And then, the idea started . . . and then it was like 'What about Brantley Gilbert?' He's a little country, he's a little rock. He's kinda both. Now we'retalking about opening up to entirely different section of people that might not come to see you play. The next thing you know im sitting here in Nashville, weve got Daniel, we've got brantley and this thing's happening!"

Billy Idol, who's now a proud and doting grandfather, admitted to us that although not exactly clean and sober, he's left his self-destructive habits far in the past: "I'm not sober, I mean, I don't. . . I have to sort of say to myself, 'Yeah, you can do everything, man, but I'm not doing it.' If I say to myself, 'I'm never doing anything ever again' -- I'll immediately go and do it. That's what I'm like. So, I have to sort of say, 'No, man, you can do (laughs) whatever you want' -- but there's a side of me saying, '. . . but we're not going to.' I like smoking pot. I still smoke tons of pot, and so. . . I don't do coke or heroin or anything like that. I like to drink with a meal at a restaurant, y'know? But nothing else." (30 OC: . . . But nothing else)

Robby Krieger & Ray Manzarek Estate Sell Off Doors Rights

Two fourths of the Doors -- guitarist Robby Krieger and the estate the late-Ray Manzarek -- have sold their complete rights in the band to Primary Wave Music, according to Rolling Stone. The deal does not include the interests of fellow surviving member, drummer John Densmore, nor the estate of Jim Morrison.

Robby Krieger, who wrote such legendary Doors tunes as "Light My Fire," "Love Me Two Times," "Touch Me," "Love Her Madly," and "Light My Fire," said in a statement, "After 58 years, and the most magical of times, I've decided to sell my share of the Doors to Primary Wave. This will enable me to help the many charities I've been involved with, and some new ones too. I know Primary Wave cares about music, art, and about helping legacies go to even bigger levels. Our longtime Doors manager Jeff Jampol will still be protecting our legacy in partnership with Primary Wave, so I'm comfortable and happy with the future of the Doors."

Not long before his 2013 death, the late, great Ray Manzarek said the anger and mood of the Doors' generation was something that was very easy for the band to tap into: "We were angry at the way the world was going in 1967, '68, '69. There was a war in Vietnam, and, y'know, that had to be stopped, and we were going to clean up the environment, and do all those good things that hippies were trying to do, and everyone was angry, man. So, y'know, we tried to make the music as hard and as powerful and as exciting as possible, and when you've got Jim Morrison as your lead singer, well, y'know, that's a, that's an extra plus, so . . . that's what it was all about."

IN OTHER CATOLOGUE SALES NEWS

Warner Music Group has acquired the "recorded-music rights and income streams" from the Yes catalogue. Variety reported "The full acquisition includes 12 studio albums, as well as live recordings and compilations; terms of the deal were not disclosed."

Included in the deal are such seminal Yes albums as Fragile, Close To The Edge, and 90125, including the FM standards "Roundabout," "I've Seen All Good People," "Long Distance Runaround," and "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," among many others. (Variety)

Axl Rose, Billy Corgan, & Alanis Morissette Perform At Lisa Marie Presley Memorial

On Sunday (January 22nd), family, friends and well-wishers paid their final respects to Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie Presley in Memphis at Graceland. Lisa Marie, the 54-year-old mother of four, died in Los Angeles on January 12th after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose spoke before performing "November Rain" at the request of the family. Also performing was Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan who sang "To Shelia," with Alanis Morissette singing her 2021 song, "Rest." Among the speakers were Lisa Marie's mother Priscilla Presley, longtime family friend, "Memphis Mafia" member -- and now Beach Boys manager -- Jerry Schilling, and Sarah Ferguson, among others.

Ben Smith-Petersen, the husband of Lisa Marie's daughter, actress/director Riley Keough, read a tribute written by his wife.

Prior to performing, Axl Rose addressed the mourners: "I, as I'm sure many of you are, are still in shock -- as I feel I will be for quite some time. I feel like I'm supposed to be texting her, like, right now, saying, 'I'm here.' Telling her how, how wonderful everyone is. I never in a million years imagined singing here and especially under these circumstances. This is truly devastating and I'm sure, excruciating for everyone here and all of those effected by her passing. I'm honored to be here for Lisa and her family. I don't know that I deserve to be here, especially speaking amongst those that have known Lisa for longer and were much closer than her and I -- especially her family and those that've known her most of their lives or even all of hers. . . We are gathered here today to pay our respects to Lisa and her family and share our memories and to console one another to the degree that we're able. And though under such difficult, heartbreaking, and somber circumstances -- also to celebrate the life of a friend, a loved one, a beautiful and good soul, and a dearest and deeply-missed family member. Lisa's is missed and loved by many and will continue to be loved and missed by all those whose lives she touched." (1:06 OC: . . . lives she touched)

Lisa Marie is buried at the Graceland mediation garden next to her son Benjamin Keough, and across from her father, her grandparents, and great-grandmother.

Maneskin Addresses Accusations Of Queerbating

Maneskin has addressed accusations of queerbating after frontman Damiano David and guitarists Thomas Raggi have faced criticism for adopting a more gender fluid style. In an interview with The Guardian, Victoria de Angelis said, "There are some cases where it happens, but sometimes the accusations are so extreme. It's stupid for queer people, who should fight these stereotypes, to label it as this and create more hate."

The fact Raggi and David are straight doesn't mean they can't wear makeup. Or heels."

David was in agreement, adding: "Everything me and Thomas do is always filtered by two people who are queer. Of course we don't experience the same stuff, but we live every day very closely with people from the community."

Metallica Releases New Song 'Screaming Suicide'

Metallica has released a new song called "Screaming Suicide." This is the second single from the band's forthcoming album 72 Seasons, due out on April 14th.

Frontman James Hetfield said about the new song, "‘Screaming Suicide' addresses the taboo word of suicide. The intention is to communicate about the darkness we feel inside. It's ridiculous to think we should deny that we have these thoughts. At one point or another, I believe most people have thought about it. To face it is to speak the unspoken. If it's a human experience, we should be able to talk about it. You are not alone."

Slash Publishes New Coffee Table Book Spotlighting Classic Guitars

Just released is The Collection: Slash, a premium, hardcover coffee-table photo book where the Guns N' Roses guitarist gives the personal lowdown on all of his classic instruments used throughout his career on stage and in the studio.

The book is available now in Custom, Deluxe, and Standard editions via Gibson.com. The Collection: Slash Custom edition is the only edition of the book limited to 500 copies worldwide, and hand-signed by Slash himself.

The Standard edition "offers a widely accessible version of the coffee-table book featuring 364 pages in hardcover, in a slightly more compact size." The Collection: Slash Standard edition sells for $149.

Slash told us a while back about meeting late guitar legend Les Paul, who was his personal hero: "Really the most memorable thing was when he and I first met, and he really had no clue who I was, and we were sort of thrown onstage together. And so he sort of, y'know, basically wiped the stage floor up with me that particular night, and so jamming with Les for the rest of my career was sort of like a barometer of how good I was getting on guitar from that point on."

Guns N' Roses will next perform on June 30th at London, England's Hyde Park.

Bret Michaels Remembers 'Back In The Day' On New Solo Single

Bret Michaels has just dropped a new solo single, titled "Back In The Day." The Poison frontman describes the track as "a modern-day throwback to a feel-good road trip anthem."

The tune will definitely be one of the highlights of Michaels' setlist during his 2023 "Parti-Gras" North American summer tour dates with road regulars Night Ranger and Jefferson Starship. Joining the festivities at assorted stops throughout the dozen-city trek will be former-Journey singer Steve Augeri and Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath.

We caught up with Bret Michaels and he told us exactly what fans can expect from the tour this summer: "This is a combination of Jimmy Buffet. . . I have all the DJ's in between all our sets spinning -- so, it's a little like a Jimmy Buffet-Sammy Hagar-meets-Pitbull-meets-Poison. What I mean is, it's got this high-energy level but it's got DJ's in-between. There's no down time. So they get there, we've got all kinda things set up. It's gonna be, like, a circus of awesomeness and a celebration of the fans, the bands and the music."

Bret Michaels next performs on January 27th at Cincinnati's Hard Rock Cincinnati.

The Beach Boys Set For Primetime Grammy Salute; Weezer To Perform

"America's Band" -- the Beach Boys -- will be honored on February 8th with the taping of CBS' A Grammy Salute To The Beach Boys. Tickets are available for the event, which will happening in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre.

Although details remain scarce, during a chat with Consequence Sound last month, Weezer leader Rivers Cuomo spoke about the band's involvement in the upcoming TV event: "We're in the midst of figuring out which Beach Boys songs we want to cover, and oh my God, it's incredibly fun. It feels so good to play and sing these songs. And I'm reminded of how much I used them as a model when I was first starting out writing songs for Weezer."

We asked Beach Boys frontman Mike Love if he attributes the group's legendary harmonies to him and his cousins -- Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson -- all sharing a bloodline: "Well, that, that is responsible for the vocal blend, except Alan Jardine is a great singer. He's able to blend and sing with the best of them. And that was always the search for that fourth part; 'cause Brian was obsessed with four-part harmony, y'know, vis-a-vis the Four Freshman. But the Beach Boys have been distinguished by their incredible harmonies and that's due in large part to Brian's obsession or penchant for structuring, y'know, great chord progressions and great harmonies and he's a master at that."

The band's primary songwriter and producer Brian Wilson is a man who has literally logged thousands of hours in the recording studio. When asked to name his favorite Beach Boys track -- he didn't hesitate: "Ah, 'California Girls.' That's my favorite, 'cause of Mike (Love's) singing. My biggest memories are working with the voices. Giving the guys chords to sing and parts to sing. That's my favorite."

The Beach Boys' Al Jardine told us that the most enduring and beloved tracks on Pet Sounds -- such as "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Sloop John B," and "God Only Knows" -- have always held a special place in his heart: "It's some of the most touching music that Brian has ever produced. And how can you not feel the depth and breath of it, y'know and feel it, in your heart? It just touches me deeply."

Axl Rose Pays Tribute To Lisa Marie Presley

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose paid tribute to the late-Lisa Marie Presley, sharing his memories of his friend to People.com. In the exclusive interview, Rose said, "I will miss my friend Lisa. Her passing, just as her son's, or as a kid, her father's, doesn't seem real. Lisa loved her family, all her children. My heart goes out to them."

Rose, who stayed in close touch with Lisa Marie after the 2020 suicide of her 27-year-old son Benjamin Keough, added, "Her son's passing was shocking, tragic and devastating. It was something that, at a point, you obviously didn't want to bring up but awkwardly would in an effort to let her know you cared and were thinking about her, about them, and to be of any comfort one could, which she appreciated. (I tried) to let her know of the constant thinking about her, them, and wanting the best for her."

Axl explained, "I wanted her to be happy, to feel good about things, at least as much as one could under the circumstances. And really, with the closeness of their relationship, one could hope -- but truthfully, it didn't seem, at least without some real time passing, a reasonable reality. What comes after life who knows but I'd like to think they're together, her and Ben with her father and Ben's grandfather in some way, and Lisa, and the most important men in her life are happy together."

Rose revealed that he was able to talk in-depth about Elvis Presley with Lisa Marie: "I was fortunate enough to hear about her father and her experiences and memories with him first hand. She came to shows and we hung out backstage. It was always great to see her and she was always fun n' super supportive."

He went on to say that she took great pride in the way her father's story was told in Bad Luhrman's award-winning Elvis biopic, recalling, "Over the last few months we spoke a lot about the Elvis movie which she was very proud of, and especially that it touched on her father's love since early childhood of black gospel, and later, the blues. She was very nervous at first of how the public would react to the film because it was so important to her to do right by her father."

Mark Tremonti Says He Is 'Sure' A Creed Reunion 'Will Happen At Some Point'

Mark Tremonti says that he is "sure" that a Creed reunion "will happen at some point." During a recent radio interview, he said, "There's always talks — people running ideas back and forth — but we don't know as of yet, 'cause we're so in the deep with this Alter Bridge record that's it's tough to kind of get sidetracked right now."

He continued, "I'm sure something will happen at some point. Creed was such a popular band back in the day, it would be a shame to not do something with it. I know there's still tons of fans out there that would appreciate it, so it's just a matter of timing."
