Def Leppard Drummer: Mick Mars Alone Decided To Leave Motley Crue

As Motley Crue carries on with new guitarist John 5, Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen makes it more than clear that it was Mick Mars' decision alone to quit the road. It was announced last fall that Mars had retired from touring, but that the 71-year-old guitarist will remain a part of the band. For years, Mars has been suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.), a crippling degenerative disease, which affects the spine.

Blabbermouth transcribed some of Rick Allen's chat with the Appetite For Distortion podcast, as he shed light on his recent tourmate on the massive "Stadium Tour": "It was Mick's decision to really move on and just get to the next part of his life. And we all know that Mick has suffered terribly, terribly with pain; you see it on his face all the time. And I think the only time I ever saw him truly in his element (was) when he was up on stage playing with the band. It was more his decision. That must have been a super hard decision."

He went on to say, "It would have been different if the guy was being thrown out of the band, but it wasn't like that at all. It was a personal choice that he made. And you can't say that that's wrong. It was right for him at the time. . . it must have been a very difficult decision for everybody to have to go through that."

Definitive Eddie Van Halen Interview Book Published

Van Halen fans are in for treat with the recently released book, Tonechaser - Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey With Edward Van Halen. The tome by musician, friend, and journalist Steve Rosen chronicles the pairs relationship between 1977 and 2003.

In addition to major in-depth chats with Van Halen over the course of his most important years creatively, Rosen is able to paint a vivid picture of life on the road, hanging out, recording at 5150 and just simply existing in the rarefied air Eddie Van Halen lived and breathed.

Steve Rosen spoke about the difficulty in juggling the dual-role of being both a die-hard Van Halen fan -- and an actual buddy to the guy creating the music: "Ed would ask me about a song or he would play something for me and I'd go, 'Yeah, really good' -- when in my head and my heart I'm thinking, 'This is so remarkable, I don't even know the words for it, Edward. What and I supposed to say, to you?' And his response to me -- because I almost came off as if I was underwhelmed -- was, like, 'Well, man, I thought it was really neat, I thought it was really good.' I had to walk this line between going overboard every second I was with him."

Slash Believes Guns N' Roses Would've Been Cancelled In Today's Climate

During a recent chat with Yahoo Entertainment, Slash admitted that Guns N' Roses' behavior back in the 1980's would've gotten them "cancelled" today.

Although taken to task back in the day for their at times gluttonous behavior -- along with material that was often deemed misogynistic and homophobic -- Slash says there's no way the band would've survived unscathed in these more PC-centric times: "Everything that we did (laughs) would've gotten us cancelled in this day and age. We would not have fared well in this environment, for sure. I mean, on so many levels -- right? But that's just, y'know. . . I mean, a lot of things from back then would be what you considered, uh, 'acceptable' at this moment in time. I can't put my thing on a specific thing because, 'cause it's pretty much all of it."

Guns N' Roses will next perform on June 30th at London's Hyde Park.

Richie Sambora Revealed As UK's 'The Masked Singer'

Bon Jovi's co-founding guitarist Richie Sambora was revealed as "The Masked Potato" on Britain's talent show, The Masked Singer. Loudwire reported, "Over the course of his run, Sambora had performed Elvis Presley's 'Viva Las Vegas,' Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah,' Fleetwood Mac's 'Go Your Own Way' and John Newman's "Love Me Again."

During the performance of 'Go Your Own Way' he even played guitar while in costume, which took a bit of doing. Sambora appeared on England's Sunday Brunch on Channel Four and explained: "They cut my gloves off and matched (my) fingers to gloves" -- and admitted he couldn't see the instrument while playing it.

Dave Grohl Plays Private Gig For Crown Royal

Dave Grohl played a rare private gig on February 10th at Phoenix, Arizona's Crescent Ballroom for Crown Royal whiskey. Grohl, who was featured in a Super Bowl ad for the famed Canadian Whisky, performed a four-song set at the invitation-only event, "which was meant to celebrate the hospitality and military communities while working with two of the brand's long-standing charity partners, CreatiVets and Packages From Home."

Grohl's mini-set consisted of acoustic run-throughs of "Times Like These," "My Hero," "Best Of You," and "Everlong."

Blabbermouth transcribed some of Grohl's comments to the crowd regarding his and Foo Fighters' connection to Crown Royal, stating, "If you're wondering why I'm here. I've had a long and fruitful relationship with Crown Royal. This goes back a long, long time. I'm talking, like, late-'90s, maybe mid-'90s. We went and we hung out with this band called Pantera a long time. If you've ever had a night with Pantera, you won't remember it. But Pantera loved the Crown Royal. And they got us hooked on that Crown Royal."

Grohl went on to recall, "It got to the point where we started getting the Crown Royal backstage. Then it got to the point where we started bringing that f***ing Crown Royal on the stage with us. Then it got to the point where our audience knew that we loved Crown Royal loved so much that our fans actually f***ing made a cape of the purple bags and sent it to us. So when we were. . . That record -- our fourth record -- has the song 'All My Life' and a bunch of s**t on it. I was wearing that f***ing cape while we were mixing that record. Prized possession."

Rob Zombie, Sepultura & Arch Enemy Members Featured In New Moby Doc

Rob Zombie, Sepultura and Arch Enemy members are featured in a new documentary called Punk Rock Vegan Movie, written and directed by Moby. The documentary had its world premiere and was the opening night film for the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival last month.

According to Blabbermouth, Moby opened up about the documentary, saying, "'Punk Rock Vegan Movie' was created to shine a light on the surprising and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and desperate urgency of adopting the uncompromising ethics and actions of the original punk rock activists."

He continued, "After it makes its world premiere at Slamdance, it's yours. It's my goal to give the movie away, as I can't in good conscience try to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism."

The documentary is now available to stream on all platforms via www.punkrockveganmovie.com.

U2 Set For Fall Las Vegas Run

As expected, U2 is headed to Las Vegas. The band officially announced the "Sin City" run via a Super Bowl Sunday (February 12th) ad, which stated the "U2: UV Actung Baby Live At The Sphere'" would take place shows this fall at the new globe-shaped arena. The MSG Sphere shows will mark the band's first without drummer Larry Mullen, Jr., who is recovering from back surgery, and will feature stand-in Bram van den Berg for the 2023 concerts. No official dates have been announced for U2's Vegas stand.

According to the announcement, "The Sphere show has been in the works for a long time. We don’t want to let people down, least of all our audience. . . The truth is we miss them as much as they appear to miss us. . . our audience was always the fifth member of the band. Bottom line, U2 hasn’t played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again. And what a unique stage they’re building for us out there in the desert. . . We’re the right band, Actung Baby the right album, and the Sphere the right venue to take the live experience of music to the next level. That’s what U2’s been trying to do all along with our satellite stages and video installations, most memorably on the Zoo TV Tour, which ended in Tokyo 30 years ago this fall. The Sphere is more than just a venue, it’s a gallery and U2’s music is going to be all over the walls."

Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton touched upon performing with a new drummer for the first time in their career, explaining, "It’s going to take all we’ve got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat, but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bram van den Berg who is a force in his own right."

Over the years, Bono has been no stranger to self-promotion, and admits that he has no problem doing that, since he sees it as a necessary part of the music business: ["I come from a long line of traveling salespeople on my mother's side. I mean, I will sell my wares, and I believe in them. Rock bands get all shy and don't like to discuss the filthy lucre and pretend that their songs exist entire to themselves, which we all know is not true. You've got to get them on the radio. You've got to get people to take them seriously. I mean, it's, y'know. . . the job is not over when you finish the song, sadly."] SOUNDCUE (:23 OC: . . . the song, sadly)

U2's new album, Songs Of Surrender, drops on March 17th. The set will be available as a full 40-track digital set; a limited edition 40-track double CD with hardback deluxe book; and a limited edition 40-track four-vinyl collection.

Van Halen's Debut Album Turns 45 Today!!!

It was 45 years ago today (February 10th, 1978) that Van Halen released their self-titled debut album. The collection, which hit Number 19 on the Billboard 200, peaked at Number Four on the magazine's Top Rock Albums chart, and redefined the direction of hard rock for the 1980's. The set, which was produced by Ted Templeman -- best known for his work with the Doobie Brothers -- spawned such instant radio staples as "Runnin' With The Devil," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Jamie's Cryin'," and the band's killer reinvention of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me."

The tracklisting to 1978's Van Halen is: "Runnin' With The Devil," "Eruption," "You Really Got Me," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "I'm The One," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Atomic Punk," "Feel Your Love Tonight," "Little Dreamer," "Ice Cream Man," and "On Fire."

Back in 2001, Gene Simmons spoke to Eddie Trunk and shed light on his early connection to Van Halen: "I found a band called Van Halen and flew them to New York and produced their first demo, which included their first record and a lot of other tunes that would up (on other albums) through the years. And I couldn't convince (Kiss manager) Bill Aucoin to sign them, or the record company (Casablanca), because Bill Aucoin thought that they looked like Black Oak Arkansas. And I told him he was on crack again, because nobody knew who that band was, and so what if they were there -- this is the next big band in America. I really believed it, I couldn't convince anybody. So I said to them, 'Y'know, I got ya signed (to a production deal), go back to L.A. after the tour, let's see what happens. I gotta go out on tour with Kiss.' At the end of the tour, they got a deal with Warners and I tore up the contract (and said) 'consider this a gift.'"

Back in 1978, David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen shed light on how they finally inked the all-important recording contract with Warner Brothers Records: "(David Lee Roth): We got discovered. The president of Warner Brothers came down in a bar one night. We were playing for free and he came with our producer Ted Templeman and they said, 'We wanna sign you.' You gotta have faith in yourself, y'know? It's hard. . . (Eddie Van Halen): You gotta keep at it. A lotta people get together, y'know, and they change members every other week. Y'know, they go. 'Oh, who are they this time?' -- y'know? You gotta stick together and just keep workin'."

Killswitch Engage Gives Update On Ninth Studio Album

Killswitch Engage are making progress on their ninth studio album. The band's vocalist Jesse Leach wrote via Instagram, "When I make a record I get so lost in it, it can drag me down and truly hold me prisoner. I've got the songs to show for it and I'm proud of my work so far!"

He continued, "New Killswitch Engage album is almost demoed out and ready to be reworked and considered. Then on to re writing and deciding what the ideas and concepts are before we actually begin to attempt to record."

Report: New Foo Fighters Album Coming Next Month

They've got a new album coming out in, er, March, Foo Fighters. . . which I'm very much looking forward to."

Neith Moyles went on with his shift and never returned to the subject and the band's management has yet to comment. The Foos will hit the road in May but has yet to announce who'll sit behind the drumkit following the death of Taylor Hawkins.

Hayley Williams Says Taylor Swift Inspired A Paramore Song

Hayley Williams of Paramore says that when she was 19 she visited Taylor Swift at her home and was inspired to write a song that Paramore recently recorded.

She told People.com that they were both just beginning to experience success and Taylor just seemed so together. She was a great cook and also very organized, to the point that she had a closet filled with ready-to send gifts for people she's thankful for.

Williams said, "I was like, 'Oh my God, my life is so not together.' There are still Christmas gifts at my house that I have not sent to my friends just sitting there in the back of my close."

That's the moment that served as inspiration to write "Running Out Of Time." The song is from Paramore's new album called This Is Why, to be released on Friday, February 10.

Paramore will be on the road opening for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour beginning next month.
